Sold my ATC250R 3 wheeler last week and picked up a 400ex over the weekend that I found it on craigslist. We do a lot of trail riding and the 250R was just not fitting the bill. I was going to get a TRX250R but want something I can just lug along while I follow my 7 y/o son.
I got the 400EX for $1,450 and it has full Yoshimira stainless steel exhaust system/pipe, DG nerf bars, itp wheels, k&n filter, Pro-Taper handle bars, Moose rev box, Hot Cams stage 2 cam, Hot Rods crank, Dyno Jet stage 2 jet kit, aftermarket gripper seat, extra new 13, 14 tooth front sprockets(it has a 15 on it), wore out tires, bad neutral safety switch, headlights don't work and a smashed aftermarket front bumper. The plastics are in awesome shape and motor runs good, I may have to re-ring it because it smokes a little after riding it hard but that isn't expensive to do. I put a '06 450R hood on it from a quad I used to have and it turned out pretty good. I am planning on powder coating the nerfs & wheels black and I am trying to find some decent used tires because I don't want to get too deep into this 400, I eventually want a 450R but don't want to spend the cash right now with the economy and such.

Anyone else have any 400ex quads.

WOW! all i can say about the new plastics. I am trading my trx 250R this next week for an 05 Raptor, had alot of offers for built 400's but really didn't care for the styling much. thought the bug eye lights were pretty ugly but man it looks like a whole differant quad

Is it stock bore? Moose rev box, cam, and crank on stock bore?

jakesdad36 -Thanks, I will pm you about that bumper

MonroeMike -Thanks

homebrew13- The plastics turned out better than I expected. I was looking on ebay a scooped maier hoods but remembered I had that old '06 450R hood in the attic and thought I would give that a shot before I bought a hood. I am planning on buying an '06 headlight and adapting it to it.

HONDALUVR - The Xtreme is allot of fun. We have had that one for about 2 years back when they first came out. It has been a good reliable quad. My 7yo son prefers it to his CRF50

TravEX - Yeah, it is a stock bore from what I have been told. I am planning on a new timing chain and a set of rings in the next couple of weeks. I bought it from a guy who didn't know much about quads, he bought it with all the stuff done to it. I am hoping to find a 416 piston in it or bigger.

I pretty much did the exact same as you did. I had a atc250r... ended up parting as it would never sell took the money and bought a 400ex out of texas. I was in the same boat as you too with your son riding.. Mine was on an lt80 and the 400ex was the perfect option to ride with him. I have had mine 4-5 years now.. Keep the maintenance up and it'll be flawless forever... My son is now riding a 250ex so my upgrade is coming up too...lol Have fun with it

416 would be nice to find! Nice EX. Who owns the 05 R?

The 450 is what my wife rides, I had the 250r and she had the 450r and when she gets tired of riding I ride it.
Eventually I want to get an '06 450ER for her.
We had one but sold it about a year and a half ago. I bought it late in '05 and about 2 years later gave it to her to ride and I got a 60hp raptor then we sold them both to get a boat and take a little break from quads. I have been slowly getting a couple of quads together and it was easy to get a '05 and a ATC250R because they aren't that high but to get an '06 cost's quite a bit more, or at least it did back 8 months ago, now looks like you can get a decent one for about $3200
Here is out old set up

Z250 she started on, she went from this to my '06 450R making 47hp and full aftermarket suspension, she couldn't believe how smooth it was on the dunes

It just seemed odd to me that the previous owner went crank deep in the motor and did not go with a 416 or something. Was it a stroker crank? Another thing is the full exhaust system. The stock head pipe is plenty big enough for a 416 or 426, so I wonder if it is bigger than stock bore. You may have a jewel here and not know it! hehe

I have been noticing almost 80% of the 400exs around here are claimed to be 416s or 440s. i know people who bought them and then the motor will just grenade from some hammer mechanic work. Just have to find one that hasent been ripped apart. hope you found a solid one
