Hi,I've just bought an old tri-z 250 85 year,It starts up everytime on the second kick and it will idle fine,I'v changed the head gaskets cleaned all the carb i've also cleaned the piston head and flushed out the old oil and gave it a fresh tank of gas,But the prob i have with it is it smokes really bad,If i change the piston rings would this stop the smoking?if it would how would i know the right size rings to replace the old ones with...any help that you can give me with this prob would be great...thank you

Its a 2 stroke. Changing the rings has nothing to do with it smoking, (the tranny is in its own cavity) What are you mixing your fuel at? Dump the tank and run some fresh stuff at 32;1

2 strokes smokes alot after start up. Don't forget to put premix in the gas tank. If the engine is in good condition, after the engine reach normal operating temperature the smoke should be minimum.

isn't 32:1 a bit lean? I've always ran a minium of 28:1 and lotta times down to 24:1

If you want to test your rings:
Do a compression test on a cold motor and record it.
Add a tblspn of oil (2 stroke in your case) and do another identical test, if it jumps way up your rings are tired.

32:1 is safe....I run 40:1 but thats me with my set up! 28:1 seems a bit rich, but that also depends on your motor combintions ie: compression, timing, type of fuel, etc....

you can try a different oil. Some synthetics can be run at 50:1

dont run any leaner than 32:1. the premix isnt your problem. how does the exhaust smell? if it doesnt smell like clean 2 stroke, im thinking crank seals. or it could be the jetting. how does the plug look?
