my dad had this old mill in the loft of his barn, It was given to him awhile back by someone in the family. I told him I wanted to try and make some cider with it, so we pulled it down, and started to clean it up. I will take some pics of the entire thing soon, but heres some pics of the grinding gears soaking in EVAPO-RUST!! This trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro is awsome stuff.

Mmmmm evapo-rust. Why would you even bother with the cider, just drink that stuff. Probably HARDer than any cider ever made, except Johnny Jump Up.

Hah.

Just joking, man, that's awesome. I see a lot of this old-school stuff starting to get a revival in the past years... microbrewing... now cider presses/mills... I've always wanted to try cider. Not real big on alcoholic drinks, but I'd try some low-powered cider anytime...

well, we processed apples for about 8 hrs this weekend, got about 35 gallons total!! i'm pretty impressed with this antique!! still needs alittle work to the bottom of the press, but it worked good enough. Lots of work involved, but awsome using something that my ancestors used 150-200 yrs ago. I think we went through about 20 bushells!!

we bartered a large plastic crate my dad got for free that he was using for a compost. the guy at the orchard had several of the same crates for harvesting, said if we gave him the crate we could help ourselves to the apples. We got 3 different kinds, and didnt pay a dime!!!

ya, i'll have a keg party and torch it!!!

never tried elderbery wine, we used to eat them on the sides of the trails when we were kids.
I added some sugar to my cider the other day, should up the potency quite a bit.
I used honey in one, brown sugar in one, white and brown in one, and I left one natural.

Wow, dont know how I missed this thread, very cool!

It always seems to taste better when you make it yourself.

Did you drop in any tablets to kill off the wild yeast? If not I hope you get lucky and get a good strain of wild yeast because quite often it will make an awful sour taste. Honey works well, but it can get pricey. The honey will let it finish off with a nice mellow sweet taste.
