So we were out at the family farm yesterday, looking through all the old stuff in the barns and buildings. Lots of really cool old tools and stuff like pedal cars. I was poking around and came across a 79 XR185S!! Been there forever says my uncle. Its in very very good shape, only problem is one signal light has been busted off. Its still there, just hanging by the wires. Pulled it out and kicked it over, lots of compression left in her. She has 1600 original Kms on it. The motor is in immaculate shape, no leaks, no residue even. Original tires on it, in great shape as well. has been stored inside for the last 28 years. It was used around 10 years ago for a week then parked right where it was before. I found out it was one of my uncles who bought it new in 79. He said if i wanted it i could have it for 200 bucks. Still has all the original paperwork with it and all!! Not the best bike out there, but a cool barn find none the less. I'm gunna go pick it up this weekend hopefully. Of course i never brought my camera, so no pics. But i will have some here in a few days.

One thing i did notice right off the bat, is that the motor looks exactly like the one in my 185S trike. Same motor? when i have them side by side i guess i can compare. But does anyone know off hand?

those are sweet rides man! its a better version of the newer xr200 and id say better than that crf 230. im not sure if the top ends the same as a atc but the bike is manual clutch. my neighbor had one and it looks cool retro and makes really good power for its size too!! have fun with it!!

Yeah I believe some of the engine parts interchange, at least on the top end.

According to this chart, the XR185 was only made for one year in the US. Not sure how rare that makes one in Canada.

I looked it up as well and could only find one year of them made 1979. I havent been on a bike in around 15 years so it should be a little interesting the first time out, lol. A buddy af mine has a 84 XR200 and it breaks or breaks down everytime we take it out. The bolts on the topend just loosen off, everytime. Gotta wonder why it was only made one year........ could be bad

If it's got turn signals it's an XL185s. Top end parts may interchange with the ATC but the bottom end is different. I had an '81, it was a great running bike. Used to ride around town with it on the weekends. Simple to maintain. I'd suggest cleaning the carb, and removing the clutch cover to clean out the centrifugal oil filter. The mufflers on those bikes tended to rust around the midsection, very tough to find a good one. Good luck with it!
