View Full Version : Anybody else getting the deer hunting itch?

Well, it was another cool, rainy, windy day here in MN... So that got me thinking... Man! Deer hunting is only 5 weeks away! (for rifle that is) So, what did I do? I went out and mounted the gun rack to the front of the BR, changed the oil, and gauged the tires.... Gonna have to bust out the 7mm rem. mag. one of these days and get it cleaned up! Anybody else getting excited?

Gettin' the itch down here in Bama, too.
The air's getting cooler and the leaves are changing. I watched several deer through the binoculars day before yesterday....counting points and dreaming of deer-chili.
I'll have to wait till mid-November though since I only rifle hunt, but then our gun season runs non-stop till the end of January.
I snagged me an old WWII German 8mm Mauser that I'm going to use this year. I love old battle rifles........AND deer-chili :)

I did check the accuracy of the .243 yesterday, on the offchance a deer meanders into the back yard.

Sounds about like my season last year... Had a 6 pt come out behind me and stand so close, I could have jumped out of the tree and tackled him, except for the big old pine in my way to shoot him... Didnt see anything after that till we were driving back toward home, and almost hit one with the truck... WTF

spent much of my weekend clearing brush and making sure my shooting lanes are right. Put up 3 new stands on the property. I insure a cider mill so I took many trips of apple peelings up and around my stands. I planted turnips close to my hot stand this year. I hope the dear come in to find them when the ground has a little snow cover on it. Ten of us through in $100 each and big bucks wins at end of year. Bow, shotgun, inline. biggest at end of season. I am going to win this year.

Drive an older/more solid vehicle......smack'em down when they attempt suicide by car, and take'em for a ride to the processor.... .
BTW, you must have a big back yard if you need a flat shooting rifle for them. Deer come to within 35-yards of my breakfast table if apples are still on the ground under my tree....though I haven't shot any in my yard(yet). Just seems too easy.
When I come across them on the back-40, that's a different story.

It's 157 yards to the treeline behind the house. But with houses a half mile or so through the trees, we typically just use a .22 if we're shooting out back.
The scion takes em down...but always does a few grand worth of damage when it does. 50 bucks for the deductible and away we go again.
with the old car...hell I killed 5 or 6 and never did any damage. screw a gun, I kill by deer with whatever tool happens to be laying on the rear floor of the car. Cresent wrench seems to work pretty damned good.
"well it was 4 in the morning, 28 degrees outside, course you weren't there.........pussy. In a camoflauged deer blind with grease paint on my face. I've got deer urine on my boots.........I'm not sure why."
happy hunting guys!
If anyone would like to come pick acorns next year...feel free, the damned crows are annoying the piss out of me on the driveway, hence the reason I tested the accuracy of the .243 on a few. Still dead on, still deerless with a rifle.

The look on the Trooper's face was priceless. Buddy of mine and his wife stretching a dead deer across the hood of their Ford Escort.....front cap torn nearly off the car from the impact.
He's holding the front legs out his window while she was trying to see over the hood and the deer....who's rear legs are duct taped to the driver's side windshield wiper arm..

We had a early doe season this year, 4 days, and i shot a 120 pound doe. I had barrowed a friends 870, and fell in love with it. (i've got an old winchester 1200 20 gauge) So i spent $500 and went and picked up a brand new 870 express super mag, and a nice scope, rail etc etc...
I cant wait to fire one of those 3 1/2 inch sabbots though.... It will hurt, I promise....

I have had a few red dots, and cannot find one i like. EoTech, Plain jane red dot. I like millet's 1-4 power red dot, but they are like $200, cost.
So i went with a Bushnell, 1.4 - 4 power scope, got it for like $80, so i can't complain too much.

I would love to hunt deer. Where I am from though no one will let you hunt their woods. All the state ground around here is hunted to death since no one will let people hunt their lands. I don't own any land and the land I hunt squirrel hunt in won't let me hunt deer in. I wish I could get hunting rights for that woods though, I have seen so many in and around there. Last year while squirreling I had a small doe walk into the woods about 10 yards away from where I was sitting. Shortly after that a six pointer walk in right be hind her. Well good luck to the rest of you this year.

I went yesterday morning and evening. Saw 11 deer total. Only one in the AM.
Shot at a fairly nice 8 point, arrow hit a wire on the fence I had to shoot through and it deflected. He was walking up a fence line. My treestand is only about 20 yds away looking at an opening through the fence into a big field. Since he wasn't crossing and was about to go being some brush I had to try. I wasn't very happy. None of the others really got within range.

Gearheadtom

You've got that thing going into stew already? Everyone I know around here lets their deer hang for at least 2-3 days (if it's legal), then they cut it up into the different portions of meat.
hancadam
10-18-2009, 09:53 PM
Too warm to let it hang. We still have a ton of flies. Got up into the 50's today even though we had our first frost this AM.
I am in TN, not NY. We can use crossbows now all season. Also we can use anything centerfire as well during rifle. I read the TWRA is worried about losing hinters. The older hunters are are getting too old and the younger folks aren't hunting. So they are trying to attract more people.

another way you can flush that deer meat is to get a large icechest and put your deer in it, pack it with ice and leave the drain open.
Keep packing it with ice occasionally for the next 1-3 days. Just do it until the water coming out of the little drain runs clear.
another method...if your deer is smaller...a lot smaller. five gallon bucket with a hole drilled in the bottom, suspended. same thing, keep packing ice on it. Makes the meat a LOT better.

I've been out a few times, but I've only seen a couple deer, and that was in someone's backyard on the way to the area I hunt. The deer around here seem to be very tame and they like to hang around houses. I've been close enough to them before that I could have thrown a rock and hit them.

A guy I used to know had a white Festiva. His car had a license plate on it that read "DRNGED" (deranged). He didn't have a truck so when he went hunting, he strapped the deer to the top of his car and went on his way. I wish I would've had a camera at the time.

I had 6 walk up on me around 6:30 Friday morning. Thought they were all does so I shot the biggest one. I didn’t notice the rack until I was pulling it out of the woods. Guess this is why it was the biggest. It’s got 4-7 points depending on how you count it.
Using a Marlin model 336 30/30 around 60 yards.
