i just was given a 250 big red today i drained the gas out the tank put fresh gas cleaned carb now here is the problem i can get it to start but it wont stay running i put a sponge in the backside the carb and it will stay idle but cant give it gas there is no lid or airfilter in the box it appears to have dry rotted so does the bike need the filter for back pressure

it could be taking in too much air without enough back pressure, so when you give it gas it drowns and dies. put a small piece of plastic with 3 or 4 holes punched in it over the backside of the carb and it should work better than the sponge. it worked for me. I used a cut out from the butter container lid LOL hope it helps

Any rust or other material that may have gotten past the filter may be partially plugging your jet.

sounds like the jets are stopped up ... in your carburetor

go buy seafoam gas additive you can get it at wall mart
buy a cheap spray bottle put about 1/4 of the seafoam in the spray bottle put the rest in the gas tank with 1 gallon of gas start it up sprits a few sprays in the intake while the bike is running let the bike idle down spray it a few more times
you should notice a big difference

Get a carb kit and rebuild the carb... My BR is picky about having a clean carb, and get a air filter for it... All can be gotten through Dennis Kirk

my big red has no filter or anything off the carb and runs fine. not that i recomend running it this way, the idiot before me had it like this.
