View Full Version : 200s engine rebuild

ok so I'm going to rebuild my 200s motor over the winter here is my list to do's:

1. new stock piston/rings/clips/pin
2. new timing chain and sprocket
3. new clutch fibers/plates/springs.
Anything else you guys suggest redoing?

couple questions for the guys who have done these motors...

do these timing chain tensioners need to be replaced or should I reuse mine if it looks ok? and last what kind of clutch fibers (Barnett ?) should I use and what about HD clutch springs what brand are good? I want to pay close attention to the clutch rebuild because I do alot of hill climbing with this machine.

If you have it that far apart you could spring for a new oil pump for added insurance, but if your cam looks ok it probably isn't an issue.

How much do oil pumps run anyone know and do they ware out often?

and I should re-word what I said before about using the trike for hill climbing. I don't pound the hell out of the 200s but where I live it's nothing but mountain. so I do alot of riding up steep rocky paths and mud holes so I want to make this as reliable as my wallet will allow. the trike runs great! never lets me down just wanna freshen her up. Thanks for the replies.

i just rebuilt my 200es and timing chain tensioners were only 20 for the set off ebay, if i were you i would go for new valves and valve stem seals and lap the valves good.

200s has an oil pump? Since when? All the 200's ive ever rebuilt never had an oil pump on them. The 250's however do...Also definatley change at least the outside timing chain tensioner as these get alot of wear and causing a tapping sound alot of times. It wouldnt hurt to put new valves in if it was smoking to be sure the valves werent the culprit.

the oil pump is buried behind on the clutch cover side

cam chain tensioneer and guides, new cam chain, engine oil seal kit as well as new engine gasket kit. (get a good kit not the cheapest you can find as the good kits tend to seal better on older parts)

valve job from a bike shop? Also figure new valves, yours probelby have a "lip" aroun the intake and a "bevel" around the exhaust so they are probebly worn beyond specs. a set of valves is like $30. get the jug, and head and covers bead blasted if you can prior to mackining, then go to the auto paint shop and get yourself some hi metalic basec alloypaint. this way you can repaint it to look new, but it also helps draw the heat out rather than causing heating issues.

my local bike shop said $90 for a valve job and if the guides need to be replaced it would be like another $30. is that about the going rate or is that too high?

i charge $100 for a valve job including the price of the valves. thats about the rate around here

ok so I have a good list to start with here. what about the clutch anyone have any opinions? should I spend the money on a barnett clutch plates, fibers, and springs or should I go with stock fibers, plates and barnett springs? I can see this is going to add up quick for a simple rebuild...lol...but I want it done right. this is going to be the first time rebuilding a four stroke with an auto clutch. I have a manual and all the tools I can ever need so is there any words of advice because I'm tearing the motor out of the trike tomorrow (10/11/09)

i like the versae (spelling?) clutches and springs. for abotu $50 shipped you can get them from bikerchick on ebay.

check your auto sping cluthc (the 3 inside the drum next to the normal cluthc itself) those can et worn and those pads are like $100 a set. you may have to machine the drum surface to get rid of the lip if yours are worn.
