I recently got my hands on a 1984 Honda 200s. When I got it the pull cord had been yanked out, the brakes were locked down and it had a few leaks. After some TLC she is running like a top. Only down fall for me is the pull start. She is cold natured and usually takes 6-7 pulls to fire off. I have cleaned the carb, jets are not clogged, it's getting fire to the spark plug, just cold natured. So I was wondering if it is possible to maybe rig up an electric start for it or maybe installing a kick start. Not really wanting to spend a lot of money seeing it is 25 years old and it's worth that much anyways. Just thought someone might have an idea. I firgured an electric starter, battery and switch should be all that is needed. Tieing the battery into the headlight should recharge it when running right?? Let me know if anyone has any ideas. Thanks.

there are goki aftermarket starters sold, i know they are available not much else, i would take off your pull start and soak it in wd40 did this to a friends when it refused to go back in and it worked perfect

Yea I had looked into the GOKI starter kits for it but they are too expensive for something this old. The kits cost almost as much as the bike. Looking for something that is a cheap fix. Don't really care if I have to rig it up. If it works it will serve the purpose.

Welcome to the board.
Adjust the valves, it may start easier.

or you could find a 200e engine

I wouldn't recommend trying to rig something up. A Goki kit is your best option, but as you said, they are pricey, and really not needed on a 200.
Follow MonoreMike's advice ^^^^ and start by adjusting your valves. A properly tuned 200S motor should fire right up after 2-3 pulls.

you can use the whole clutch half of an 200x engine, that will give you kick start

Well if you want a really cheap solution, get a junk pull start cover that does not have the guts in it. (please only do this to a junk cover since good pull starts are hard to find. Then drill a hole in the center of the cover. Then take a cordless drill with an adapter on there to use a socket on it. Get a socket that fits the crank nut that inside the cover in the center of the cage. Weld the socket to a 3" extension and then all you have to do is use a drill to start it. Of course this means you have to carry a cordless drill with you but it is a cheap option and you can always use a rubber plug in the hole to keep water out while riding.

good idea freakboy and it would be a good excuse to buy a cordless impact .... but as others stated these motors should start in the cold with 1 or 2 pulls .... what if you push start it? does it still start hard? does it start good when it is warm?

yea they definitely should start good no matter what, mine have always started with one or two pulls especially with a new plug. I actually use that method for a few motors I have cause I get tired of pulling them and holding them still, like my gas air compressor.

lets face you are going to have to do some tinkering to get it running better, that starter is goig to burn up fast having to turn over so many times to start it
