i picked up this SX this past summer and i was told the electric start works but the battery needs to be charged. so i charged it up and all it does is make a clicking sound when i hit the start button? i know its hard to say with out looking at it but what do ya think is wrong with it?
i was going to replace to trigger celinoid but thats $80 outta D.K.! i'd hate to be worng, i'm only going by that because we use to have a bronco that would go threw celinoids and it made the same sound.
any help i appriciate ,thanks again for the help guys.

Bypass the starter relay with a screwdriver, between the 2 big wire.If it start, change the relay,if not, check your starter....

Sounds like the starter is dead, and yes take it out and can test it externally. You can get a rebuild kit for them cheap or get a working used one for around 30-40$ Sometimes you can find killer deals on new ones for 75$ or so. Remeber there are 2 different ones, the long shaft (87 and up) and short shaft ones(84-86).

try hooking it up to a charger or booster and see if it starts. if it does its a battery problem
mine did this and it was just a loose connection at the terminals

If you want get a test light, hook the ground clip to a GOOD frame ground, and put the tip of the test light on the side of the solenoid that goes to the starter.Hit the starter button(as long as you hold the button in you should have a light, once you let go the light should go out. If the light lights up, your solenoid is good, then you need to check the cable from the solenoid to the starter(clean the connections) and re-try the starter. Once again make sure you have a KNOWN GOOD battery. This way you don't have to pull the starter.
OR
Pull the starter, hook the body of the starter to ground(from battery to starter body) , and put a hot from a battery onto the 10mm nut you removed the starter cable from. Use a known good 12V battery. It the starter turns over the starter is good, if it doesn't you need a starter. Make sure you have the body of the starter grounded GOOD.
Best of luck, can't stress enough how clean your connections should be.

You can test the starter right on the bike.

Yah don't remove the starter just to test it. Leave it on the bike. It's actually better that way as you'll still have the load of the engine on there (it it cranks) and it won't jump at ya LOL. But yah, if you hear a "click" the solenoid is probably working. I would "guess" either the starter or a loose connection. Also make sure you're in neutral if you test the starter on the bike.
