So I replaced my starter solenoid on my YTM 200 thinking this was the problem not starting. Come to find out, its not. When I hit the start button, I can hear small click...I thought it was coming from the solenoid but actually its coming from the relay assembly. I am a little comfused on testing this stuff. I bought a multimeter but not sure what exactly I am testing.

First off, If I am testing my start switch and I disconnect it from the harness from the solenoid, should I have any power in the plug that goes back to the switch. I obviously have power going directly to the solenoid from the battery but is there power in the harness to the switch. In another thread, it says to hook a test light to this plug and when you hit the start button the test light should light. Is this right?

Should the relay assembly (small little square box with 4 male prong's) click? Can I test this relay any way? I hate to just buy parts if I dont need them!

I REALLY appreciate any help at all! I had back surgery a month ago and this is my work horse! Thanks!

Two things come to mind. I have had that same thing happen to me twice on different bikes. One time the motor was seized and the relay was popping. The other time the started went out. I'm not an electrician but I can tell you how to see if either one is your problem. First try to pull start the bike if it pulls then you motor is fine. Second jump the 2 posts on your solenoid with a screwdriver (make sure the handle is insulated because it will shock you if it isn't. If it turns over I have no idea if it doesn't turn over its most likely your starter. To make sure jump the starter using a battery, put the positive on the little post on the starter and the negative on the starter case or the frame if the bike goes over good starter if not bad starter. Hope that helps, its kinda ghetto but that's how I do it.

my ytm 200 also did this about 2 years ago. I found it out to be dirty connections. Go thriugh and clean all plugs and put some good dielectrode grease on them all, I like the westren brand, it is for there snow plows and works great. Start with the battery and work towards the starter, if you find any green on a wire or plug that is the one causing the trouble. Good luck.
