I have a chance to pick this 86 CR500R bike here locally and cheap. so cheap i wont say how much, . My dad used to race them back in the 80's. I have never really rode on a big bike. used to ride around on my old cr125 all the time when i was a kid, but that was 20 years ago. I am well aware of the power, and that this is not a beginners bike. considering it already has a big bore kit, boysen power reeds, fmf gnarly pipe with DG silencer. Also has all balls bearings front and rear. It is not running, and the owner is done with it. something to do with the carb. In the least i may pick it up, get it running, then resell if i cant handle the power. or find me a 250R for a swap....... IDK

Buy it... If you dont like it, it will make an excellent ATC500R motor!

I believe the 86 era bikes were plagued with case corrosion because of the metal used, especially around the waterpump area. look it over good, and if its solid, BUY IT!

and i dont believe they made a big bore kit for the CR500, KX500 yes, but unless it is a one-off bigbore, i think your chain is getting pulled.

is there really a need for a big bore kit for a 500cc two stroke?

Yes there is a need.

I agree 100%. like a 550 or 600 kit with some radical ports,

but, i am pretty sure no such kit exists for the CR5

Yes there is a need.

maybe it is because i ride trails so if i ever even got a 500 2 stroke i would just sell it..basically a 500 is to much bike for me and my riding style

a 500 would be awesome for trails because of the wide powerband. it would be much better than a 250 for sure.

i had an 86 cr500. had a fmf pipe, porting and a vertex single ring piston. lots of fun and gobbs of power! i remember shifting gears on the road it would burn the tire in every gear.

the 86's are also well known for having one of the wildest powerbands. Everyone ive talked to says the 86 is one of the most powerful CR's

my dad says his 85 was crazy. He said the whole thing was powerband, he used to race in muskeg with it. He said he would gear up instead of down to go through the skeg.... LOL, and yes i am trying to find some old school pics of him riding. I let this deal pass jst so you guys know. i am in the market for an 85, just like my old man had..... :)
