Who knows maybe someone on here can help you out with non trike related things.

I was a diesel mechanic for almost 10 years, hurt my back and had to change jobs. Now I work for CBS Radio in Seattle and I am a DJ in a club. Had the joy last year of being a Race Track announcer at Pacific Raceways (formerly Seattle International Raceway)

When I'm not breeding 3 & 5 toed sloths or moon-lighting as a man-whore, I run the boilers, air compressors and make demineralized water in an alcohol beverage bottling factory.
Hey, don't laugh about the sloths, have you ever seen how fast a sloth moves? One zesty session for a sloth can take days. A true excercise in patience and animal husbandry!!!

Foley Cat in Ks. Most of our compressors out here are small 100's of 3412 and 3406's. Few old 398 and 399's. BP has 7 3606's in our territory and Kinder Morgan has 5 3612's. When we travel to the Oklahoma that is when we work on all of the 3500 series. I have never been a fan of gas plants, I get tired of seeing hte same crap all the time.

I would much rather be working on a loader in the middle of a dairy than at a compressor site.

By the way you guys talking about dairies we have about 25-30 in southwest ks. Biggest are milking 12,000-14,000 head and the small ones are milking 3,500.

The automotive business is a dog eat dog world. In order to make enough money to support a family and own a house you'll probably need to work at a dealer on flat rate. You'll be trying to bill out as many hours as possible while trying to do as good a job as you can without taking too long and losing your shirt. This pay system creates a lot of "friction" between the techs in the shop because there is inevitably someone who is favored by whoever is handing out the work, that person gets the "gravy" and makes more hours than everyone else doing the easy work while the others do the challenging stuff and get less for it. Basically going to work in the morning is like going to Vegas, you can come home with a bunch of cash or you can come back empty handed, you never know. That's the main reason I got out.

Now I go to work, get my check every week without having to worry "am I gonna make hours this week", my health insurance went from costing me $150 a week to less than $70 per MONTH, I get more money per hour, I work an 8 hour day including my paid lunch, I get time and a half for overtime, and after 25 years I can retire with a 50% pension plus free health benefits.

Oh, and don't count on getting much more than two weeks of vacation at a dealer and that will take at least two years to get. I got 2 weeks after one year now and I'm going to start my third year where I'll get 4 weeks, then after 15 years I'll hit 5 weeks vacation. Oh, and I get twice as many holidays as I did at the dealer.

I would look at being a mechanic in a shop as a stepping stone to something else like working for a town or city where you won't have to deal with the BS. My boss at my current job always says "you rarely see an old auto mechanic" and I tend to agree. Guys usually get out of it as they become older and wiser.

All said and done I'm a much happier person now than I was working at the dealer, even though my commute went from 20 miles in 25 minutes to 50 miles and about an hour each way. I'm still home before 4pm every day and I get to spend more time with my family.

I have lots of friends that I grew up with that were auto mechanics. All of us are in the 38-30 age and all of them left the automotive field long ago except one that started his own shop and seems to have a good business.

I was the odd ball and done diesel mechanics, I always made more money than any of them and had better benefits. I was very happy with my job, I really loved what I was doing (running service truck for caterpillar) I was just sick of the company I was working for. I got the chance to get on with a coal fired power plant a couple years ago and it was a great move for me. I did take a small pay cut at first but it has all come back now.

Lots of Cat dealers will pay for you to go to school.

College student and a skate guard at a local Rec center. My actual job is something like a life guard for a 29,000 sq ft skate park (yell at kids, make sure they don't kill themselves, help little kids out of the bowls, etc.). Between the fact that helmets are mandatory (kids theses days are too cool for that), it's a pretty technical park (Smallest drop in is 8' with 5' of vert) and that it's an outdoor park in Vegas (120° summers and 30° winters) not too many people actually skate it. So most of the time I am inside playing basketball with the local kids or watching TV. Can't really complain for $10/hour. Only average 15 hours a week, though.

I work in a nursing home.... The Presbyterian Home in New Hartford. There are days when I love working with the residents, and then there others [a lot lately] where they drive me batty. Either they suck you in emotionally with they're health/ family dilemmas, or are sooo insanely pick with whatever they're individual preferences are. I've been at this place for about 5 years now, and have had the best/ worse experiences ever. Like I said, love my job- but if you get in too much with it, it really eats you up when someone dies, or they they start failing. :(

Heres a pic I found on google, looks like its from Nellis, probably during a Red Flag.
