Tachyon Inc. Makers of tachyon xc helmet cams recently had a video contest. Un be known to me they entered two of my riding videos taken with their camera in the running. As luck would have it I was selected a winner along with a few others. We won $600 worth of helmet cameras and software to make 2d and 3d videos. The new 2010 model has a 90* field of view which is about a perfect match to what the eye sees. I mounted it to my bumper this weekend we we went to the dunes.. Check out the quality of the video taken from a camera that was mounted to the front bumper... Unlike the GoPro which is really distorted video I think they nailed it... Hope ya like it. Never mind the comments of choice of music ... It's all about fun :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnYVjHUlINE

The GoPro doesn't have a "distorted" view. It's called a wide angle lens.
Your vid looks good though. Got any footage mounted on your helmet? Curious to see if the distortion in your vid is just from the vibration from being mounted to the bike.

I just went to Gopros site and checked out some sample videos... I personally don't care for the "unnatural" looking wide angle. The HD quality is sweet though.. I'm a self described video junkie.. see for yourself on my videos.. I also have a Flip Ultra HD that takes very nice videos but would never hold up the rigors of riding.. Am I biased? You bet! Tachyon has stepped up to the plate way before THEY entered me into their video contest.. Their support team is second to none and are alway quick to answer any questions or concerns I had.. And at nearly $100 less than the Gopro Hd I think this is a great choice.. I had a Gopro for about a week and promply sold it on ebay since watching the videos reminded me of my passenger truck mirror..In the video there are a few points with out the motor running beginning, middle, and the end of the video.. As you know the Trx450r has a rigid mounted motor and throw in a High compression piston, a Drag Cam and it's sure to vibrate like hell! But the video to me looks very good considering it's mounted on the frame.. ( I have a short video showing mounting techniques) .. Next stop.. Mount the Xc under my RC helicopter and take it for a spin!!! :)

I just watched your video and the quality seems pretty good but mounting on the frame is causing the video to "warp" due to the vibrations. That camera seems pretty good but in comparison to the Go Pro HD it just doesn't hold up. You may not like the wide view (which is adjustable on the HD) but you kind of need it when using it for things like RC Cars, motor sports, ATC's, etc. I am a professional Videographer and Video editor and the video you took seems to have a lot of really weird things going on and I can't quite tell what it is but I think the camera records a little funny when it is vibrating (just watch and you'll see it looks like things are morphing a bit).

Well I don't want to get into a pissin' contest with a professional.. All I want to say is to me this is an excellent camera.. "Rc cars, motorsports, atc's"....... looks like you hit everything I'm into.. Atc70's, R/c helis and planes, Legend car racing... You sure you aren't a Suwami also? you me to tell me all along i've been doin' it all wrong? :) Little funny and weird things in the video just go with the name... Goofball Productions! LOL! I Thanks but no thanks! :beer

Oh well you were talking about quality and how good it looks but you don't mind weird distortions and artifacts in the video, whatever floats your boat. To me that's a worse kind of distrotion then a wide angle lens....BTW I think the camera is good I just think you should find another place to mount it.

It's mounted to the frame.... what do you expect? next time it will be on my melon then you can gauge the quality.. mount the go pro to the frame and see what happens.. any camera I've ever mounted to my helicopters or bikes has got the crap shook out of them and get all weird... it's called vibrations.. look at my other Helmet cam videos with it on my head and see if they get Jiggy with it even using the 09 model.. Besides only Teletubbies have protrusions on top of their heads! :)

I have vids with the GoPro mounted to the handlebars and to the headlight of the 350x. There's some vibration there but not bad at all really. I've been nothing but impressed by it. I LOVE the wide angle lens. Just goes to show, different strokes. ;)
As long as you're having fun making vids, that's all that matters.

The thing about the current Hero Wide is just that you can get them so freaking cheap on ebay. Under $140 shipped brand new for such a camera is awesome. And that's even for the motorsports model which comes with a ton of mounts. It might not be the best out there but it's definitely a great value and a great way to get into making vids.
Pinstriper; where is that riding spot? I never heard of it but it looks killer.
Jeff, you can see the HD Hero footage here.

It isn't full resolution though. Great clarity still. I want one. I'm a little concerned about editing HD files but I'll upgrade my PC if I have to.

It's Sand Mountain Nevada which is 235 miles from home..we make about 5 or 6 trips a year and go riding there... It's a blast! I have Adobe Premeire elements 7 and it taxes my Pc real bad.. What I found recently was if I immediately convert the files to WMV files and reduce their size then do the editting it was much easier on my pc..what ever camera you choose have fun! And let's see them videos!

I'm half tempted to put this to rest... I may end up ordering a GoPro hd and mount them side by side for the next trip.. then make a split screen video or just two videos ansd show that the XC gives a better "normal" picture.. My eyes might be 180* but I ain't got got no fisheye lens in my cornea.. worst case is I'd lose $50 after peddling it on Ebay..

You just don't like the wide angle lens effect. Nothing wrong with that but it doesn't make one better or worse than the other. A lot of people prefer the wider view. My first helmet cam had a 90 degree view and I didn't like it. When mounted on the helmet you can't see nearly as much. I like to be able to see the handlebars and everything.

Here, I thought of a way to illustrate the difference and why some people like wide angle and some hate it.
I used an old video game. First screen shot is set to a 90 degree field of view (fov). It looks perfectly natural like a Tachyon.
http://www.triketrash.com/random/quake1.jpg
This screen shot is set to a wide angle fov. Not quite 170 degrees though because the textures in the game wig out a little bit when you go that high. I think this 140 degrees.
http://www.triketrash.com/random/quake2.jpg
I did not move the character in the game at all. All I did was drop the console and change the fov setting. The green square shows you what you can see with a 90 degree fov. You can verify it with the first pic. As you can tell, the wider angle allows you to see quite a bit more of what's above, below and to the sides of the camera. That's why many people prefer wide angle for helmet cameras. The down side is the curvature of the image. Things out in front appear farther away and things to the side have the fish bowl effect.
It's a trade off. Much larger field of vision with a bit of curvature to the image or, much smaller field of vision with no curvature at all.
Edit: here's a still image taken with a gopro to illustrate the same point. With a 90 degree field of view you'd only see what's in the green square (but it would be larger with absolutely no curvature).
