View Full Version : question about 200x front on 250sx swap

ive looked through a couple post but havent found the answer to my question... i am going to do the common 200x front end over onto my 85 250sx i know you can just swap the forks over but is there any reason that you cant just swap the whole thing over triples and all? are the steering stems the same? and only one other little thing is there anything special that has to be done to swap a 350x front light onto the 200x front end that i am going to use? picked up the whole front end of the 200x complete minus tire and brake handle for $20 :w00t: so thats why i am starting this project hate when you find cheap parts on projects i just talk about doing someday....

I just did the 200X swap on my SX. I swapped the whole sha-bang-a-bang. You'll need to cut off the original SX steering stop from your frame because the clamp bolt for the stem on the lower tree hits the steering stop when you turn right. Some guys have done the fork only swap and made different spacers to run the skinny up front, not sure about the front brakes since the forks are a bit wider(mabey space that in as well). Then all you need to do is fabricate some new steering stops to weld onto the neck of you frame to hit the stop on the lower tree. Personally I think the SX looks way better with the 200X front clip on it then it does with the wide forks. I just took mine for a rip tonite for the first time after the swap and it's so much nicer without the fatty up front.:D

Hell, I did it 6 years ago :lol:

I should have a post that shows the stops I made. Make them out of a cereal box lid 1st, then cut them out of 3/16th or 1/4" thick steel and mig weld them in place.

It's simple but not so simple for everyone. I went thru all that in that post, years back. Otherwise, use common sense and have a ball.

EDIT - To run the 350X hdlt, you flip the straps around in the housing and wire the single SX wires in parallel to the 350X headlight. It is nice and bright, NO ISSUES :)

A junk 200X frame gets you the stock stops, or make them like I mentioned above. My old post has to be there somewhere.........

IDK if Jeff said it, but if you weld on stops put the old or a used race in there so the stem doesn't get all fired up. Those lower (outer) races can be a beyatch to get in there just right!

Anyhow, anyone can do the 200X or 350X swap, both work well. But it's the finish stuff that makes it a nice swap, lots of guys just say "screw the steering stop" but it's not hard if you have a few skills.

I can make up some stops for you if you want, then you can mig weld them in place or like I said, using a junk 200X frame works great too :)

BTW - The 250R front is much too high for the SX, although the 83/84 250R is a great suspension to add to the SX, I'd sink the legs down a bit but they have about 9"s of stock travel if I recall.

thanks for all the info i am in the middle of the swap now i here are some pics of where i am at so far...the front is switched over and the old stop is removed i need to do a little changing on my stop but i am going to try to replicate the factory x stop(cause i dont have anything better to do haha).. i have run into one problem so far afer switching i noticed that the axle for the 200x is either not the right one or something is really really wrong..it doesnt seem to be anywhere near long enough :confused: it is only about halfway in the fork on both sides.. going to big spechts house tom. night to do some parts checking..all the more info is more then appreciated after swap is done its plastic and light hunting time

after finding out the the forks were for sure bent went to spechts warehouse haha and found a straight set for mockup anyone have a straight pair of forks they need rid of?? next step getting the steering stop on and adjusted up and finding a 350x headlight

That's the standard bend, right below the lower triple! One of mine was bent, nothing a 40 ton press and some V blocks can't handle. It's amazing how far past center you actually have to take the tube to get it straight again. Someone here has taken them to an exhaust shop and had them tweak it in the tubing bender, might only cost you a 12 pack of bubbly!:beer

Well here is the junker that I have with the 200x front end on it. I am going to use the 200x headlight guard but use the SX headlight on mine. Oh I have a set of worn out 200x forks if you want them. They need rebuilding.

Thanks DC im still working on the stop trying to get it marked on the frame so i can weld it and put the supports on the frame like that factory one..what would you want out of the forks scott?? oh and one other question what tire size are you guys running in the back?? heres where it sits as of tonight old worn out forks rode it a little in the dark forks are for sure need some work haha but they are borrowed and one other pic a little before i started this project

Looks great! I'm running 20X10-9 tires, I want more of the sport look not the UTE look. I just recently did the forks and tires. I rebuilt my forks(inside--everything that waas a wear item) and it was gravy. I estimate it cost me about 40-45 bucks per fork using all honda parts except the oil.

Oh yeah-- nice load of wood your trailering, the old SX probably doesn't realize it's back there:w00t:

well i know there was just a post about not bashing or making fun of people but what if you open yourself up to it and deserve it...cause i just made a fair sized mistake haha and deserve it...i got my steering stop all made up and some braces for it tacked it on made sure it was straight turned the bars(never rode it which is where the mistake is) looked good plenty of clearance between triples and tank so i welded it up and then.......rode it BIG mistake i managed to make the steering stops to close! :eek: i know for sure that i wouldnt dent my tank but i dont feel like taking a mile to get turned around so i think for ease and time i am going to go with the stops like everyone else is making.. :lol:
