im looking to do just a valve oil seal replacement on my 84 ytm 200 to stop the smoke. I have the parts and was under the impression i could do this while the motor was still in the thing..But after removing the valve covers, i can see no possible way to replace these seals without the top end off, and removing the valves completey. Am i missing something? Looks like the top end needs to be removed, and the rockers pushed out before this can happen..looking at the manual, this is more complicated than it should be..Im a 2 stroke outboard guy, and have just the yard to work on it. Very close to selling it, but if i can do this on the quick and fairly cheap, ill give it another go. Anyone ever do this?

you always have to pull the valves out to do seals as far as i know

actually, i had hoped the rockers would have a securing screw on the top to remove them so i could get at it from the top end..I am a novice, but ill make a 2 stroke outboard fly..Looking at the teardown though, im not sure i am up to the task in the 40 degree backyard..

I've heard rumors of people making a fitting that goes into the spark plug hole and filling it with compressed air. Supposedly the compressed air keeps the valves in place while you remove the keepers and springs. Then you can change your seals and replace everything. I've never actually seen anyone do this, but I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work in my head.

There we go.. I have the fitting made, and that was the plan, but i cant see how the springs make it past the rockers to get the seals out.

I wouldnt mess with compressing the cylinder....Just pull the head and take it in your basement or something.....If it were me i would do it on my counter top

Its not hard, just takes a little bit of time is all.

man..the clymer has engine removal before the top end removal. So does the whole motor need to come out, or can the top be removed inside the frame? and there is a wheeler and nice trailer on CL now in gray maine..smokes some, but idles all day w/160 lbs compression and perfect plastic.
