what tools are needed to separate a 83-85 200x crank.i have a bearing puller and it work great on the small timing sprocket but i cant get the puller to get behind the other gears.

Its kinda hard but I use 2 decent size screwdrivers to get the bearing off a little and then find a puller to pull the bearings off . the Timing sprocket will come off with the bearing . To take the crank apart it takes a-lot of force so I use my 20 tone press and push the rod pin out . Putting it back together is a hole different story thow .

Doesnt matter which way you press it out , will come out either way .

That pin is just pressed in, like SL said, either way does the trick. Then the pin, thrust washers and bearing are junk......

Getting the halves in sync and true with the proper clearance is a whole other ball game!!

Shortline, you know your stuff!!, which I respect IMMENSELY!!

I'll PM you if I have to but I'd love to talk about truing cranks. I have the lathe and dial indicators, but it didn't go so well the one time I tried. I believe I bent the pin with too much force. The best mechanic I ever knew said, "you have to beat the piss out of them"

Anyhow, it would be great if you could sned me an email and if I could talk with you about cranks and something else I've been trying to figure out. I need someone with oldschool tech!! :D

A big brass hammer Might come into play . Getting them true is def the hard part but I dont think I have ever seen one perfect after a rebuild but very clost to it . I want to know how you can bend a crank pin ? wow

Dirtcrasher LMK and we can talk shop.

I'm in on for listening to how truing a crank goes. I would love to have some info on the procedure. I forsure could take one apart... . Like someone said going together is a whole ballgame I haven't put much time into thinking about.... I would like to hear what a experienced veteran has to say about it.

I have rebuilt and trued tons of cranks but it is very hard to explain it all in writing. It is one of those things you have to see. There are all sorts of items needed such as press, square, lead weight or brass hammer, feeler guages, wedges, dial indicator, digital verniers, refrigerator, oven etc etc.
