View Full Version : thinking of changing the sprocket on the YT125

I took that sucker out of the yard today and I am very disappointed in the top speed on this 2 speed beast. I actually seemed to go faster in low gear? Anyways, I took it down the alley and around the block a few times and I'm betting it never got past 25 MPH wide open. I'd like for it too get up to 30-40 MPH if it's possible.
Here's the plan... We have a waterjet at work and I already had them cut me a sprocket for the BR so it's been done successfully already. Right now I'm running the stock 13/49 sprockets and I'm thinking of going smaller on the rear, say maybe 13/40? Does that sound too drastic or should I give it a try?
Any opinions?

I'm a little confused here, 2 speed? There is no hi/lo gearbox and I'm pretty sure that the early models were 4 speed and that later models were 5 speeds. If you only have 2 speeds that could be part of the problem.

1982 YT125 it shifts down for speed and up for low gear with neutral in the middle.
Am I missing some thing here? Enlighten me please.

The 1982 yt125 should be a 5 speed. I think my 1980 yt125 was a 5 speed too, but I only ever used 4 of them. If you are only using 2 speeds than that may be why you are topping out at only 25. Try seeing if you have 3 more speeds past what you call hi gear. And I always thought that 1st gear on the yt's seemed kind of low, but you should have 3 more gears past your 2nd gear. If you only have 2 speeds, then you have a transmission problem.
ya man, mine is a 83 yt125. and it shifts 5 up, neutral at the bottom. and first is way low.....

I just went out to the shed to check it out 1 more time and boy DO I FEEL STUPID! !
It's a 5 speed. I was shifting down out of neutral for speed gear and I shifted up to get in neutral then up one more time to get into low gear. I had no clue there were more gears up there.
I don't know if you guys have this sticker above the shifter on the plastic but mine has an S and an L with an arrow pointing in between the 2 letters. That's where the Speed and Low gears came from.
Sorry for my stupidity but I'm getting smarter about these three wheeled things. :D

Yeah, I'm betting it's going to go faster with the discovery of 3 more gears. :w00t:

I thought the link was an inspiration to all women. Look honey it's easy. LMAO
I thought keeping the front wheel on the ground and turning while on the gas was against the rules with this thing. That front wheel has something against earth I think.
I'll be taking it out today but I have to get rid of the leaves in the yard first and then I'll be visiting Goodwill to get me some work pants. I'll report back later.

I really hate to say it, but this really may end up as one of the more classic threads on here. Glad things worked out for the positive but you may be the future victim of alot of ribbing. This has the potential of being bigger than calling a paint job with a spray can, "e-dogging". LOL

You're right, I thought of that at almost the exact time I told myself I was a frigging idiot. LOL
