I have a 1991 blaster with about $2k in goodies on craigslist, looking to trade for a nice 250r or 350x, as they have about the same value outr here. In the first couple hours I have received two offers, one for a stock 83 250 that has carb issues plus some cash, and another strait up for an 84 with new 10 inch rims and tires with a DG pipe and silencer. So I pitch the situation to you all, what should I do? Pick one of these or hold out for a 350x or a water pumper?

Personally, If you plan to ride A LOT, from what i hear, the Air- Cooled R's are not as reliable. I would hold out for a 85 and newer 250r (if you don't mind a quad) or a 350x. And as far as that 83 with carb issues, what kind of issues?? won't run?? i wouldn't do it.

okay, update on the 83 it has the 300 kit and the carb just leaks. It's still not worth more than 500 out here no matter how nice it is. He'll throw a couple hundred bucks in too.

should be plenty of late model r's and x's out your neck of the woods, I would hold off for a few weeks, and see what kind of offers roll in. Dont know how you role in the patience dept. though.

I agree wait, usually the guys who call that fast want to dump their bike for a reason. Like others have said the air cooled r's are fun but they get hot and blow up. I have personally blown one up and I now own liquid cooled bikes and a 350x. In your ad you could specify the years you want (85-86) that would help out. I have been in your shoes before.
Good luck.

I just had a guy stop by and offer me an 84 tecate and a parts bike. Should I do it? I really just want something that will hold together for a while. Is that even an option with old kawis? Not too sure about the funky radiator either. How good are these?

Is it me or lately does it seem people are always trying to trade Blasters for trikes? lol

Hope the Tecate trade works out for you.

How does it run? Lookes like some work to make it a nice Kawi. Here is the 250r that you passed up, i put it up on CL and sold it in less than a day anyways.

Ran just as good as my Tri-Z just not as torquey. Had a spare motor and scats on mitch's.
And here is the Tri-Z i almost stupid enough to trade for a quad for my wife, no disrespect, i just love my Tri. We will have to get together and go out imperial sand dunes and represent trikes.

Ya a little. Richter performance was a small player in pipe manufacturing. I think they only catered to ATV's. I had a couple of buddies back in the day with pipe & silencer combo's on 250r's. I seen them mainly on air cooled trikes. Never seen any on dirtbikes. Do a google search on them and see what comes up. A little red scotch brite will clean that silencer up real nice.

How good is the plastic renew on old fenders? I'm just going to replace the front one, but the rears are salvagable. What about this rear shock, it Doesn't look OEM but I could be wrong. I love the sticker though.

The rear shock is aftermarket, they didn't come from the factory with a braided line. I have no idea what brand it is though.

I may be wrong but the gold anodizing on the reservoir it may be an Ohlins shock. If it is it is a top of the line shock for sure. What does the reservoir say? How about a picture of the reservoir?

This thing is going to get the full traetment, I'll see if I can find anything on the shock, even if it is an ohils its a blown one, I'm sure when I rebuild it I'll find out. Thanks, everybody for the compliments and no sweat on the Tri Z (80smxrules) I wouldn't have done it I if I were you either. Get her a quadzilla, they are pretty tame stock, if you do mess with it it will turn into a monster and make you think twice about the banshee.

Soon you will se pics of this thing torn down and restored!!! I think I might just gusset the frame before something happens. We found out that the insurance company won't cover trikes at Pala raceway so I just have to ride on closed days. Darn guess the tecate will just have to have the track to itself:Bounce

Speaking of Pala raceway, i have already taken out the ol' Tri-Z to pala about 4 months ago on a saturday when it was just crazy packed. Anyways when i took my tri-z off of the truck along with my yz people were looking at my trike like it was an alien from another planet!! Especially when i fired it up and did a hot lap with some quads. I felt like i was either riding or looking like a pro (not even) becasue every body, and i mean everybody had there eyes on me (my trike actually) the whole time!!! People didnt know how to react seeing a 2 stroke 3 wheeler hauling trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro all over those 4 joke quads!Hehe.
Lets get a group to go out to either ocotillo or glamis soon, what do you say?

My man I am game for sure. It's funny, while I was talking to you on the phone I was walking throught the no fear warehouse to get new gear to test ride the track on tuesday when its shut down. Honestly I was hoping to do the test on a Tri Z but the tecate will do just fine.

Okay, here is the update on the tecate. The poor brute had a completely unacceptable layer of oily filth all over the whole trike, so a can of engine degreaser and an extra large can of B-12 and half a bottle of simple green later most of the grime is off. Still have more work to do, but the pressure washer hose is junk. I believe I'm not even going to bother with the front fender. The parts bike has a red one that my OCD won't let me use, I'll put in a call to escondido cycle salvage to get a decent green one. the rears have some serrious gougesand oxidation, but I'm not willing to lose the team green sticker so I started with scotch pads (stupid plastic ones)no dice.Started sanding them and the 320 is not doing the job. I'll post pictures once I get a little further.

Lets not forget that almost every bolt was loose! Where can I get 5 gallon buckets of locktite?

Okay, here is the update first ride out of the way! So at about 1:30 in the afternoon yesterday I rolled out to pala raceway for a special ride session on a closed day with family friends and investors and Mr. Ronnie Renner. We rode the newly redesigned vet track(first trike to ever touch it which is weird, because it seemed to flow pretty well on the tecate. After about 15 laps the track finally dried out enough for me to get comfortable and start hitting the jumps. The rear shock is blown so jumping was a stupid idea, but successful. The sad thing is the front and rear shock were balanced in performance so that mean the fronts need some serrious love, that will definently be high on the priority list. I need to find a much more aggressive set of tires, can anyone recomend anything? I do need to get a longer shifter, as I could not use my new boots and had to switch to my work boots. Overall the tecate can post a decent lap on the MX track and flies strait and level. Hope to do it again soon or at least see some of you out in the desert or dunes.
