You have to "preload" the spring. You actually probably didnt even need a new spring. Depending on where it broke (usually the bent over tab that sits inside the recoil cover) you can heat it and bend a new tab and itll work perfectly fine. But since you have a new spring im assuming you assembled it correctly but forgot to give the recoil 4-5 turns to put tension on the spring first. I can do it for you for free if you want to send it, youd have to pay shipping both ways though. Its up to you.
I always wind the spring up as tight as i can get it in my hands first, then clamp vise grips to hold it from unraveling. Then sit it down inside the recoil cover and put the tab into position. Then i wind the new rope and pull it over to its slot. But the end i will melt so its firm and pointy. It makes it MUCH easier to get through the hole when your trying to get it back through. Then sit the recoil into the spring and twist it about 4-5 turns to tension the spring. Once the tension is on it and youre holding it tight, slowly turn it until you see the end of the rope. Use a very small screwdriver to feed the rope into the hole. Its hard if youve never done one, but once you get a few down its easy to do.

hmm... seems like it should work out... i was trying to coil it up by hand than put it into the housing.. which as we seen failed!!
now that i look at the two parts of the old spring and the new spring.. im thinking the new one wont work... it done make its way into the center of the housing like the original one did

There's a manual for that here, if you don't have one.

well the recoil spring i bought WAS the wrng one.. the coil dont make its way towards the center of the recoil for the tab to grab onto the rope sprocket? .. looking online none of the springs listed look like what i bought.. turns out from what i could find the spring i bought is for a 2-12 hp briggs motor and there springs actaully hook into the rope hub..
found a few online, if i cant get one threw my local mom/pop style powersports shop ill have to order one..
guess tell than ill have to do it the hard way so the wife can ride today, put the rope hub onto the motor pull.. rewind and pull lol

you should be able to bend the hook of the spring around however it needs to be. A little heat might help but you shouldnt need it. If the yamaha spring is like hondas, all you need to do is bend the end into a hook with needle nose pliers. If the Fleet Farm spring is roughly the same length as the yamaha spring it should do the job fine.

its hard to explain but i will try so bear with me
the honda/yammy recoil springs they way its coiled makes its way to the center of the 'case' . the briggs?? spring stays coiled against its self aince they hook to the housing than to the rope hub, where as the honda/yammy springs catch on the rope hub as you pull the rope

i know what your saying, i had a problem with a honda spring that was bent once and it wouldnt reach to the center to hook. Could you go back a few inches on the inside end of the spring, and bend a curve in it so the end of the spring curves and then reaches to the center? This is what worked for me once. (thats the best i could explain it with words, hopefully it makes some sence)
