What "washer" are you talking about. Post a picture from bikebandit and give us the part number so we can see what you're talking about.

it looks like you have them both upside down.bottom taper should point up with bearing sitting in.and the top should point down with bearing in it.

I never installed one of those kits, but I would leave the washer down there. I doubt it will cause any problem but if it does, it will still be easy enough to take back out.

does the stem stay the same diameter all the way to the bottom or is there a step? does the washer interfere with the lower race seating properly?

Those are upside down. Reguardless of who took them off before theyre upside down. Turn them around and yes if theyre good, reuse them.

You guys aren't reading his post or something. He states that he is wanting to run tapered bearings (are they even offered the the 185?).
But in which case he wouldn't need to run the stock races. He is just wondering if he should leave that washer on or not. What is pictured on the steering stem is the washer in question and the lower-inner race. I can't tell for sure if the race is upside down or not but it does not really matter.

Isn't that "washer" a dust seal?

Nope, Mike, it is a steel washer. There is a rubber seal that goes in between the washer and race, but it is not pictured

I just did this with those tapered bearings. YES I left the washer down there and it didnt interfere with anything. Youll be fine. Any more questions just ask.

Well the directions that came with my moose kit were vague to say the least. I just tapped in the race, installed the cone bearings, and insalled the seal. All is well.

ahh ok. didn't know if it even came with some. sometims the maker has beter directions on their site. if not, I'd contact them directly and see what they say.
maybe do a write up with photos and such so the enxt guy knows what to do.
