I recently got a 83 yt125 that is in bad shape, but i traded a snowboard for it so whatever! I had it running but not well it was starting hard, got it home, got up in the morning and now there is oil all over the floor! I was thinking of rebuilding the engine with a new gasket set, new piston rings, top end bearing, and cir clips. Just wondering how long it takes most people to do this and if you think it is worth the time? Is that all the parts I need, unless there is an unseen problem inside the engine! I am new to 2 stroke engines but pretty mechanical.
Thanks

+1 to give it a good bath and see where it's coming from. If, however, you do need to split the cases to change a gasket i would also rebuild it like you said.... As far as time rebuilding it i'd say if you're splitting cases and not just doing a top end probably 3-4 hours. Top ends usually dont take long, about an hour.

:welcome: With all the good advice around here, you can have it done in no time at all. Dont let that trike get worse, do the rebuild then tear it up.

Why does it need rebuilt? Is it low on compression? Does it sound like it's ready to fly apart? Do you know where or why the oil is leaking? Do you even know where to add oil on the 125 and how to determine the proper oil level? Do you have the right oil in it? Is the oil leaking engine oil or 2 stroke oil? Get a manual. Learn about your trike. Check to make sure it is in a proper state of tune and that the parameters are within factory specs. Welcome to the forums and I hope you have alot of fun with your new trike. Don't jump to conclusions on trike repair without knowing all the facts first. Don't spend unnecessary money on something that may not be a problem.

The reason I would rebuild it is because it was not taken care of by the previous owner! I believe the oil is leaking from the transmission where it shifts! Also I do not know what to put in it or how to tell if it is full! I am new to 2 strokes, used to motorcycles! I am in the process of getting the manual as well. Thanks for the info so far guys! It is a old trike and needs plastics too...anyone know of a good place to get some reasonably priced?
Thanks

Plastics OK condition- $50 I would jump on that until you find better.
