Got a 82 200e home today and began riding it around. Whenever the machine is climbing hills or has a load on it, it starts making a grinding type sound and will not go forward anymore.
Sounds like something is slipping? Clutch or gears maybe? Have not even looked at it or taken anything apart yet..

could be the auto clutch, does it do it in both high and low? also check chain and sprockets. Never seen em that bad, but you never know.

Check the splines in the wheel hubs.

Yep.. Ran it around for a bit tonight and tried both lo and high. Does it in both. I cannot tell if the slipping/grinding sound is coming from the rear end or underneath behind the engine.

OK... Worked on a few other things tonight and might have figured it out. I took off the rear wheel and chain guard to look at the rear sprocket. Splines are fine in the hubs and rear sprocket looks like it is fairly new.
BUT when I looked inside the case and saw the front sprocket, I think that is where the problem is. Sprocket looks like it barely has nubs on it instead of teeth and it is VERY shiny for some reason, I guess the wear on it. That would explain why it does fine on flat surfaces but as soon as you hit an incline and it is under a load...it starts slipping.
Now I have to get to it and look at it better. I researched a little here before posting it and looks like I will need a flywheel puller. Any way to get the flywheel off without that tool? Either way, I think I can handle it. Just have to find another front sprocket for my 200e now...

Not on e 200e's it don't. You have to take the sub tranny apart and the side case to get to the sprocket. PITA

Yeah, I see you have to take the sub and case apart but do you absolutely have to have a sprocket/flywheel puller to get it off?
The PDF manual I downloaded sucks when it comes to replacing the front sprocket. And does that even sound like that is my problem with the grinding and slipping? It seems very possible to me.

This is from a different manual.

If it's as worn as you say and it's shiny, that's got to be your problem.

You shouldn't need a puller. I did it on my 200e not to long ago and you don't have to remove the flywheel.

I don't know why the manuel tell you need a flywheel puller? When I changes the sprocket on my 200E last winter I never used one and I didn't need one... Mine was also so worn out, when I shifted in 2nd gear the sprocket and the chain grinded. While you are at it, replace the chain and the rear sprocket.

its a good idea to replace the chain and maybe the rear sprocket too. Maybe your chain is a bit stretched and you might ruin your new sprocket too.

Holy crap...what a PITA that was to get to the front sprocket. Still waiting on my new one to get shipped in, and I am looking at a pile of gears and other misc. parts. Hope I can get it back together right!
Got a manual so I should be good. That front sprocket had definitely seen better days...
