Tear Down has Begun!

Today I started the tear down of my bro's 200x.

Since the motor is shot I had to pull it out. My brother has talked about fixing this trike up since we bought it. I have always said "it's a beater bike SAVE YOUR MONEY" He has finally convinced me to tear it all apart and start redoing everything.

I already see a problem with this rebuild. My brother wants this trike blacked out! The plastics are our first concern. My brother wanted the trike a flat black and the plastics are glossy.

We both have debated on powder coating everything or just hitting it with a spray can. Obviously the can will be cheaper and if it ever gets banged up you can just reshoot it. If we go the spray can route I am not sure on how to prep everything. My first thought is to hit everything with a wire wheel, 2-3 coats of primer and then the flat black.

I would really like some suggestions on prep and tips you may have. I have already started searching ebay for various black parts and I will be posting WTB threads in the classified section.

OH and if anyone has any pics of blacked out trikes what ever the year or model that would be awesome!

Spray bombing is pretty frowned upon around here.....Not sure you're gonna get much help on that, he should just keep it the original colors.

i dont see anything wrong with using a spray can as long as u do the right prep and take your time dont just hog it on there

It comes in a spray can. I used it on a set of jeep flares 5 years ago, and they took a beating. Just make sure you prep everything and hang it from wire. That away you can fully coat the top and bottom all at once so it can bond together. I though about trying it on a set of my old junk plastics of I can find it locally still.

I need a set of swing arm dust seals!

I don't want to buy the whole swing arm bearing kit just for those. Any ideas where I could buy them??

Dust seal on bikebandit.com are 15.00 each. You are better off to pay 40.00 for a whole kit while it is off and do it all the first time around. Even if swingarm feels tight I would throw the whole kit in it.

I'm about to use it on my frame and wheels on my 200s. I'm going to use the silver metalizer on the frame and gold on the wheels. If you use that or any kinda of spray paint, you need to make sure the metal is cleaned well. I'm going to have to take a dremel wire wheel to get the tight places on the frame. After that, pressure wash and wipe down with alcohol.

If you put a good 4 - 5 coats of the dip, it should hold up pretty well.

You are correct ordered the kit today but now I cant install the steering stem.

if you are set on the whole painting the plastics thing use a super fine sandpaper to get the plastic preped. then use a krylon primer and paint combo all-in-1 can. KRYLON is supposed to be the best for painting plastics. worked great on my warrior untill the dirt road hit the plastics. and that was the last time anyone drove any thing i own.

P.S. i only did 1 coat i should have done like 3 since my plastics were weathered

Thanks for the reply. I notice everyone has "there way of doing it" so I think I'm going to use a little of everything I've read. I watch a great video on youtube were the guy hits the plastics with a pronane torch then whips it with rubbing alcohol. I think that may just be for newer plastics though.

just spend a lot of time prepping for sure... I've seen (and owned) way too many spray painted plastics that just look terrible down the line...

So the trike is progressing nicely. I hit the occasional bump in the road but for my first rebuild I'm enjoying myself.

I have more pics but that is the basics right now. At a stand still on the rear end till I get my swing arm bearing set. Which is bad because I need to order a chain but dont know what length I need because I'm using an extended swing arm.

So progress is at a stand still. I broke my hip riding a few weeks ago and it makes it hard to wrench.

I am currently suck on the swing arm though. I can't get the bearings. The axle ones came out no problem but the swing side ones are stuck. I'm to the point of cutting the bearing sleeve and I am 1/8 in from having one out. I with I had a press!

That sux you got a broken hip. Try asking around the neighbor hood for a neighbor that may have a press you can use. All my neighbors are awesome people and we all have certain tools etc that we all kind of share. I have a bunch of metal in my wrists from an accident so i understand the importance of making the job easier on your body. The x is looking very well. Be patient and you will be back at it in no time.
