Well the 87 had a few items that the 86 didnt have, but those could also be removed, so its really hard to tell. The 87 had the rear E brake, Key switch behind headlight, trilple covers, and rolled edge wheels. My tecate is half 87 with some 86 parts. I have the key switch, however the headlight bracket is an 86, so I have to weld a tab to mount the key. Mine did have the E brake stuff but dont plan on using it, as I dont care if mine is 100% correct or not. I did use the 87 sticker kit from egay. Nice tecate, and you will love riding it!

the 86 has a bolt going through the rear barke pedal to hold it on and the 87 has a nut screwed on to a stud to hold the pedal on thats one difference i know as i have one of each and they are different

I just sent you a PM, as you can get tank covers from Tony at CEET. Just give Tony a call and he can help you out...760-599-0115. Or you can get the hard plastic 2 piece system from DC plastics that replace shrouds and covers the tank.
