breaking the bead is the hardest part, use a good peice of wood and set it on the tire close to the rim and drive your car up the wood. after that its like a bicycle tire.

thanks i wasnt sure quite how to do it, dont want to spend all the time sandblasting and redoing the rims and then tear it all up putting it back on, i was thinking if i stand it by the woodstove awhile should make it easier to.

Those tire changers are worth the money that they sell at harbour freight I love mine changing tires is a pleasure. Check you tube for setting the bead with starting fluid

Probably not the best advice to give AutoXer. Although starting fluid is good at seating beads, it should be used as a LAST RESORT! I hurt my thumb really bad doing it on a truck in Iraq and I had already done it 20 times before that day. Not only that, but I blew the poor neighbor kid's tire to smithereens about three years ago and I had probably done 30 tires before that. It's a very dangerous way to seat a bead.

The rubber can harden and stick to the rim over time. Putting a propane torch to the rim can help a lot.
I bought a Harbor Freight Tire Changer and the bead breaker on it works well, but the base of it is inadequate and I will not be able to change tough tires like the ATC's until I come up with a stronger, wider base. Some magazines have an ad with a 20% off coupon for Harbor Freight.

Take it to a local tire shop and they can break the bead for you. It would likely be free or very cheap since it takes no time at all to do.

I've been known to use the jack on my trailer hooked to the truck.... Or a hi-lift jack under a bumper... Just set the base next to the bead and jack away... Or set the tire/wheel under trailer and run the jack down...
Use starting fluid as a last resort as said. The majority of the time you can get a tire aired up without it. Lots of little tricks out there. remove the valve core for the best flow, wrap a ratchet strap around the tire, stand on the tire to lightly seat the back bead then gently pull the front one to a seal while putting the air to it.... Of all the tires I've changed by hand the only one's I've ever had to use ether on was a set of 33x12.50 16.5's on 10" wide wheels....

^ tHAT WAS A GIFT! mANY OF US PAY 10-15$ PER TIRE TO MOUNT AND OR UNMOUNT.
Oooops ^ sorry................
For the Harbor freight guys, I drilled the bottom and then used 3 concrete anchors for mine, works great. I just unbolt it when it's not in use.............

i tried the board and truck trick for a few hours one day and had no luck at all. I ended up using a highlift jack and a truck bumper just like mentioned in a post above. Since then I have made friends with a guy that has a 50+ year old manual tire changer that I use for free when I need to. It has something like a jack on it that breaks beads on ATV tires pretty good.

10-15 to mount or unmount a tire is crazy.. I only pay $75 to dismount 5 large offroad tires and remount and balance them on 5 new rims. The tire shop I use has a new machine for smaller tires .. they get them done in under 5 minutes.

I did this after motorcycle shop newb bent my .125 rim with one of those manual tire bead breakers.

I have received great service from Discount Tire also. It is called America's Tire in my area though. Here is an explanation about the two names:
