engine model?

Is there a way to tell what year an engine is ? for instance there is one obvious difference between the 86 atc200x and the 87 atc200x, the kicker shaft was upgraded to a larger size on the 87 and later 86 models, would the serial number on the engine come up as the 86 model even if it had the larger kicker shaft or the 87 model?
