On our group forum there has been some discussion about the discontinuation of the front and rear fender set. I sort of got a sick feeling after hearing this, knowing that not to long ago the red sets were phased out. I called Maier to confirm this rumer, and it's true! No longer being manufactured. This is devastating for the Tecate community, since nearly all of us rely on them for our plastics now adays. This economy is forcing even established companies to cut some of their product line imo. Things are really getting tough out there.:(

I guess its time to go into the plastics business. This is really hard to believe, since you still hear of people buying them here recently. It seems as though making 20 sets of front and rear fenders and holding on to them wouldn't take up too much space. I wonder if fullbore would pick up the slack? I like their plastics better anyways.

that does suck, I was going to get a full set later this year. They are still keeping the mold aren't they? Can they be done in a group buy?

IMO - although they say it is discontinued don't mean they will not make it.
I know 2 years ago anther member got a red set of plastics. 3 maybe closer to 4 years ago i got my red set.
he asked me how i got them to do it and it was a simple, be polite and tell them you will pay the extra $$$.
The red plastics had been discontinued for quite some time up to that point for either of us.
It will just take a little more money to have them do up a set,,,, there again,,,, IMHO.

I'm not so sure the econmy being down is at fault. More like supply vs demand. You figure that if Maier gets 12-14 calls a YEAR for a set of red Tecate plastics...a little over a call a month for 1 set...it's just doesn't make economic sense to punch out several sets and let them sit HOPEING someone will call and order 1. It's not a matter of warehouse space...they have plenty of it...they just don't want to fill any space up with product that isn't selling.
Your best bet is to do like jeswinehart says...do a group buy. You'll have to order a minimum # of sets and have $$$ up front first. Then there's always the "I want a set...Put me down for a set" and when it comes time to pony up....it doesn't happen. The reason group buys USUALLY don't pan out.
Wiseco will do the same thing for anybody looking for obsolete pistons. If they've made it in the past...they will make it again. Minimum 24 sets and $$$ up front. I've seen this done with several old vintage snowmobile pistons ('76/'77 Yamaha SRX 440) and also Maico 400/440/490 dirt bike slugs.

2nd gen is screwed too because maier offers nothing for them bikes either. once kawasaki stops the OEM on the 86-87 stuff you guys are really headed for the grave. This would not be the 1st time they have done this.
maier has a bad habbit or producting plastics for popular only machines. there are others out they have have stop making plastics for and oem no longer makes them either. there are yamahas they dont even make stuff for and oem stoped also.
i think what needs to happen is we call these guys and see who is making there stuff because is 100% injection modled copied just like OEM. maybe a few phone calls to other people specilizing in the vintage stuff will help us get some plastics back for more models.

I believe the only reason Kawasaki continues making the 86-87 tecate plastic is because maier stopped long ago so people were forced to buy oem as the only source which is a good thing to keep the production going.

I hate the color and the low profile look of the maiers. I put my broken to hell fenders on befor my maier with no brakes or cracks. dc plastic mabey? A whole fender kit would be great. Or even a new look to fenders would be great too.
