185s/200 engines are overhead cam. Maybe he means connecting rod?

Ok I talked to him again and He does mean the conecting rod. he said he was riding it and it quit, when he pulled the rope it didnt have any compression. he wants 150.00 for it. I am going to look at it this weekend. but I dont know what its worth. I will probably just part it out if I get it.

Thanks for your help

Why part it out? Offer him $100 cash for it and rebuild it.

Is that an SX front end on it? Interesting. Look for rust on the frame and in the tank. Could be a fun project if some of the key, expensive pieces are usable.

Not sure you can make much $$ on it parting it at that price if the engine is crap. Shipping hurts a lot of deals. I couldn't give away a useable set of tires and wheels from a 200 I parted out. I did sell some things like a good seat, forks, front axle and brake and covered the $50 I had in it. After shipping and all, I cleared maybe $75. Rear axle and hubs were junk (hubs welded on), frame junk (rusted lower tubes), had no rear fenders, I kept the Clarke plastic tank (the only reason I bought it in the first place) and the engine which I suspect is junk since it has a rubber expandable plug where the filter should go.

Sorry for rambling - just some things to think about.

I was wondering about that front end as well. I wouldnt really be trying to make money if I would part it out. I would keep alot of parts as spares for my 200s. and you never know I might get it and decide to fix it. after all I just found out today that I am getting ready to have alot of spare time.. there closing the factory that I work for

OK. I went and looked at the 185 today, and now it is sitting under the shed with my 200s. I still dont know what the front end is off of and it has 25 inch tires on it.is that what size a 1980 185 came with? I am pretty sure that it does have a broke rod. I am looking for an engine now. it needs alot of work, but the more I look at it the more I want to fix it

Maybe an SX front end.

The 25" tires I've been looking for, apparently the 200m model had them. My TRX 200sx fourtrax has them also, though I have no clue where the entire rear end came from on that, lol. No clue what caliper I need either....

well from the specs I found on here the 185 came with the 25 inch tires. I know the big reds had 25,s as well

Ah, maybe mine has 22" as it's an 's' model.

Wish I could find some 25's + chains, though! Let us know how the rebuild goes. If you decide to just replace the entire engine, sell parts out of that one.

I have a 85 200s and it has 22,s on it. thats what they came with. I just put an ad on craigslist looking for an engine so I dont plan on parting it out yet. but I didnt plan on parting out the big red I got last year and it looks like this now

Hmmm. Maybe I will try to add a shock in the back of my 200s frame like that one has. I have a spare really nice GSXR aftermarket shock laying around...hmm.

shocks would be nice. thats why I traded for a yamaha 225 dx about a month ago. all it needs is rings, I thought I would fix it and sell my 200s, but after I rode the yamaha I changed my mind Its just not a Honda.I gave the yamaha to my nephew about 2 weeks ago.

Are you sure the Honda didn't just jump time?If the rod broke you would hear it knocking around in there.

well I am not sure. I have not pulled the plug to see if the piston moves. I can hear the crank turning when I pull the starter and the rope pulls very easily. I can role it with it in gear I am assuming that it broke the rod.. I guess It could have broken the timing chain and have the exaust valve open causing no compression.

ok I pulled the plug and the piston is moving so the rod is fine. the vavles are not moving.
so does that does that mean the timing chain is broke?

yep, the cam isnt moving therefore not opening/closing the valves

Or it just came off the sprocket.Pull all the ingnition stuff off and look there.

the timing chain had came off of the bottom gear. I finally got it back on, after I removed the engine, but it still has alot of slack in the chain. the manual says adjust the cam chain tension while its running. Is it ok to start it with the slack in the chain? or is there a way to adjust it with the engine off? also I am using the manual for my 200s I assume the valve clearance and everything are the same on the 185
