I bought this thing almost two years ago. It wasn't running at the time so I got it running only to find out it would only go backwards. I yanked the engine out and tore it apart. It sat around until this summer when we figured out that one of the centrifugal clutch springs broke. Anyway, we got it back together this week not once but twice. The first time went well until I tried to shift through the gears on the bench after the engine was back together. It came apart a second time and I figured out we didn't have it in neutral before all the shifter rods and linkages went in the first time. It shifted through the gears this time so we put it back in the bike and got it running. It runs like a top and after lifting the rear end to shift through the gears, we determined all was well and put the rest of it together. I jump on to take it for it's maiden voyage only to find that it won't operate correctly with a load on it. If you shift into first, it grinds a little with hardly any forward movement but if you shift up again, it operates normally. I don't know if it's in second gear or that extra shifter movement pops it into first gear. If you shift down into neutral, the bike goes backwards for a little ways until it seems to slip out of reverse and into neutral. You can put it into reverse and it'll drive around just fine. Anybody have any ideas as to what the problem might be? Everything internally looked fine as far as gears and forks go. The clutch is adjusted correctly (counter-clockwise rotation until resistance is felt and 1/4 turn clockwise). Everything was assembled correctly with a manual, not just thrown together.
