What makes a metal not suitable for powder coating? reason i ask is i have a frame that i want to powder coat but has alot of surface rust (it sat in the elements for about 2 years) and ive heard that powder coating weakens metals... this frame is also off of a 45 year old bike....?

i have never heard this, anything that is going to be powered coated 1st should be sand blasted to its got a clean base to stick to. go get it blasted and coated.

Any powder coater worth their salt will blast the frame first and then bake it to get the contaminants out of the metal and blast it again before powder is even applied.

You need a very clean surface to work with to powder coat. Theres no way to properly do it without blasting, and cleaning.

As long as the rust isnt bad enough to create holes in the frame, it should hold up to blasting just fine.

sorry should a been a bit more specific, im aware of the sand blasting i guess what im wondering is how much surface rust is too much surface heres an example of the worst infected area

no holes anywhere but based on appearance alone it looks pretty bad

Just looks like a la'al bit of surface rust to me. The welds have more rust than the frame. It'll look fine once blasted.
