Welcome to the forum! First, you have to determine whether or not the play is inside, or between the shift lever and the shift shaft. If it's between the lever and shaft, you should remove it and look at the splines. It's way easier to replace the shift lever than the shaft! Worst case, if the splines on the shaft are worn, you could always weld the shifter to the shaft. This is a last resort, but if you already need a shifter shaft, it's an inexpensive alternative.

you could drill a hole through both and bolt it... and you don't have to worry about burning something you shouldn't with a welder

dont drill a hole in it you will constantly be breaking bolts and eventually the shaft itself. Trust me I did it and I ended up stuck with a broken trike for about 6 months till I found someone who had one. Look at the picture you dont want that happening.

If his shaft is stripped, it'll need replaced either way, but this will get some more riding time in... use a hardened bolt

true but if you have access to a welder your way better off doing that and then just cutting it off with a sawzall when you get the parts. The best bet would be to find the parts and fix them. When I got the balls to try it, it only took a half hour to put the shift shaft in.

If I remember correctly, when you take off the left side cover, the shift shaft just slides out and back in without taking anything major apart. someone correct me if im wrong :wondering

thats how it was for my KLT 185 but when I got the parts it came in pieces and I had to line up the parts correctly. Kind of tedious but I didnt really know what I was doing either.

if its still loose after tightening do what i did, weld it. then when the weld brakes slap a set of vise grips on there. then work on getting a shaft. the weld on my held up until i stood on the shifter

if its in the motor it could be the shaft is worn or the gear selector is worn or the spring

i think you can adjust the clutch free play and that might help. just loosen the 14mm nut and turn the screw until the desierd ply is acheived

you could sleeve the shift shaft with a thin piece of brass the whole way around for extra insurance . That worked on the kicker of my F7 and hasnt failed yet. for internal, you could adjust the clutch nut like ricky200x said. Ive never tried that before. good idea ricky
