so the speedo on my 85 BR is not hooked up. the cable wont reach to where it looks like it should be plugged in. either that gearbox on the axle is turned the wrong way( if you look straight on its at the 9 oclock position), there is an "elbow" type piece missing or i have to rerun the cable and come up with a bunch of new slack to get it to be able to turn the corner. the guy i bought it from said it works but that it kept coming unplugged so he just left it. here are some pics

The gearbox needs to be turned up to meet the cable. Also the phillips head screw on the gearbox needs to be taken out until you get you cable in place, then put the phillips head screw back in the gearbox to hold the cable securely in the gearbox.

You will have to loosen your axle nut.

i ended up just tapping it lightly with a hammer and it went up. then to get to the screw i took the axle off the fork on that one side. my only prob now is , how do you get the speedo cable all the way into the bottom of the gearbox hole. since the screw is out, i can see in there (and i measured the depth with a little stick) and the cable isnt going all the way in for me to tighten the screw on. any ideas?

Maybe the slot from the gearbox isn't lining up with the slot of the cable?

I think this is the closet shot I have on my mint 87 red with speedo. I will see if I can snag another closer shot soon if I cant find one.

thanks for all the help. i guess i just didnt want to break anything. i got a towel and some pliers and forced it down in there. put the screw in, clamped the cable back to the fork at the top and bottom and took her for a spin. sure enough it worked.

Great job, glad to hear all is working well. Don't forget to put some graphite lube down your cable to keep it nice and rust and snag free.

ok thanks for the tip. so i unscrew the cable below the speedo and give it a spray? will wd-40 do, or should i spring for the lube.

Do not use WD-40, as its not really a good lube, as it cleans and removes stuff away. Find some spray on lithium grease to shoot down there or you can just soak it in a bucket of some type of oil (cheap way of doing it).
