I have driven many automatic (5 speed, cyntrifical clutch) 3 wheelers and some had issues with the clutch slipping. However, it seems like there are 2 different reasons why this happens, based on 2 completely seperate parts.
Some automatic (well, the ones where you don't have a manual hand clutch) 3 wheelers seem to have a clutch that slips when you first take off (it revs up a bit but doesn't move much, then all of a sudden it grabs, and goes up in a wheelie). Also, once the clutch 'grabs' it is locked and never slips again, until the 3 wheeler stops then takes off again (or comes to a near stop at idle). My theory for this particular case is that the cyntrifical clutch is worn out and or ruined.
Then some 3 wheelers have clutches that just slip ALL of the time, at least when you are on the gas. They don't do the thing where the clutch catches all of sudden after slipping on initial takeoff (like talked about above). In stead, they just slip whever you go hard on the throttle, even when they are already moving. My theory for this is that the clutch friction plates are worn out, letting the clutch slip at any RPM pretty much.
Is my theory correct? Or am I just plain full of crap? And if so, then what parts are really the cause of the symptoms mentioned above?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to help my friend get his yt175 (which I think has bad clutch plates) all fixed up so that we can go riding (now that I got my ytm200 back in perfect working order woohoo!)
Thanks guys!
