View Full Version : What is Difference Between Cyntrifical Clutch Slipping and Clutch Plates Slipping?

I have driven many automatic (5 speed, cyntrifical clutch) 3 wheelers and some had issues with the clutch slipping. However, it seems like there are 2 different reasons why this happens, based on 2 completely seperate parts.

Some automatic (well, the ones where you don't have a manual hand clutch) 3 wheelers seem to have a clutch that slips when you first take off (it revs up a bit but doesn't move much, then all of a sudden it grabs, and goes up in a wheelie). Also, once the clutch 'grabs' it is locked and never slips again, until the 3 wheeler stops then takes off again (or comes to a near stop at idle). My theory for this particular case is that the cyntrifical clutch is worn out and or ruined.

Then some 3 wheelers have clutches that just slip ALL of the time, at least when you are on the gas. They don't do the thing where the clutch catches all of sudden after slipping on initial takeoff (like talked about above). In stead, they just slip whever you go hard on the throttle, even when they are already moving. My theory for this is that the clutch friction plates are worn out, letting the clutch slip at any RPM pretty much.

Is my theory correct? Or am I just plain full of crap? And if so, then what parts are really the cause of the symptoms mentioned above?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to help my friend get his yt175 (which I think has bad clutch plates) all fixed up so that we can go riding (now that I got my ytm200 back in perfect working order woohoo!)

Thanks guys!

From what I can gather you've hit the nail right on the head. Seems like it's not your first rodeo. Also, look at this- http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php?109598-MASSHOLES-UNITE!!!!-%28Other-guys-too%29

In all honesty I have never even messed around with a clutch on an ATC. I was just trying to think logically (sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't, heh heh).

By the way I was curious about your sig.

What on earth is a "Tecate 500" ??

If you say it is a Tecate 250 frame with a KX500 motor crammed in it, I am going to be jealous beyond beleif.

Also, what is a "500R" ?? Is it a 250R with a CR500 motor in it?

I had a beautiful condition 2002 KX500 that I had to sell about a year ago. Man those things are fun as hell :)

Better get jealous, cause thats Exactly what his tecate 500 is. I am sure he will direct you to the build thread, he did a very nice job.

Lol. I'm not even sure I did a build thread. I've had it 90% done more than once. Every time I get it together I have to disassemble it to do some more fabricating. It's currently in a million pieces because the last time I had it together I quickly figured out I needed a new left case half. I took it apart and unfortunately had to move right after dis assembly. I'm currently building a new garage and the 500 will be back on the operating table once that is done.

Man that thing is gonna have some nuts when it is done.

The KX500 weighs 220 lbs., and I bet the tecate isn't much over that. I know my ytm200 wieghs about 270 lbs., so I bet the tecate is around probably 300 lbs. or so? Am I right?

Can I have a link to your build thread?

What year KX500 motor is going in that thing? And how hard is it to make it fit in there and what not?

I saw a "500R" in someone's sig. Is that a CR500 motor crammed into a 250R frame? :)
