well i took the leap and put money down on the 86 250r at our local honda dealer. it has been gone threw front to back has all new aftermarket plastic and the plastic gastank, tires are great. it is piped and jetted, also has been ported, so it was 2000 but got it for $1700 and i can get on it and ride with no work needed for awhile i will get pics monday when i pick it up this is my first performance trike. i have had many fast mx bikes. i wonder if it will keep up with my baja ds 650 i let my 65 year old father ride the baja and my sx doesnt fair well against my baja. at 65 my father still wants to go fast and be the leader so hopefully the r will hold its own.

a dealer is selling a trike? illegal my friend, if its an official dealer and not just some shop than its illegal. at least in my location....but other than that, SWEET sounds very nice. should be lots of fun. hold on tight!!! from the sounds of the condition she should fly past your ds650 in a strait line if ya know how to ride.... and if the 650 is in somewhat stock condition. think about it, the 250r quads are as fast as the 450s, raptors and stuff when piped and such, then chop off 100 pounds and a tire (200 pounds in you ds 650s case) and boom shes gonna be fast, if u can keep the front down. but then theres the turns....lmao

I'm not sure that it's illegal for them to sell a trike, I have seen a ATC350X for sale at my local honda shop last year.

my father works at a dealer, and even my local junkyard cannot sell them in full working condition, parts only.

That might be their choice but I find it hard to believe that its illegal for a shop to sell them. Anyway, back to the topic, congrats on the purchase. There is video on ChrisD's site of my R (when it was only 270cc's) crushing a 650 at the dunes. If that bike has a decent pipe, an OK portjob, and is in otherwise good mechanical shape it should out run that DS in a drag race.

Awesome!! - but, I wouldn't buy ANYTHING at my dealer. He has to pay overhead and includes that within the price................

Craigslist is where all the deals turn up!!

Although I in no way shape or form agree with it, "I THINK" it is illegal to sell a trike from a dealer. But honestly, the more I think of it, it's a USED trike. NOT a new machine with 25 more behind it; So maybe they can do that..........

Honestlty, this has me scratching my head but I hope there just an old time dealer and you get it. I doubt they'd have taken it in if they felt they couldn't sell it.......

Post some pics as soon as you can!!

yeah, who cares. i dont see anyone reporting anyone for selling a trike, i just know if the dealer sells the trike and if that person crashes, they could pull crap and probably sue and win. so im guessing thats why most dealers turn their heads, its all about liability crap.

If I understand you correctly and you're comparing the weight of the ATC250R and the TRX250R, there's no 100 lbs. difference between them. Without looking it up, I think the ATC's dry weight was 291 lbs. or so, while the '86-'87 TRX's weight was 328 lbs...or so. That is an advantage for the ATC, just not by such a wide margin. Both are much lighter than a DS650, though, but throw in a 190-lb. rider on one machine and a 250-lb. rider on the other....and machine weight advantages get a bit blurry.

On tight trails or in tight turns, the handling advantage actually goes to the 3-wheeler....depending of course on the riders' skill level.

no not lockport honda. i was asking if the 250r would keep up with my baja 650 ds x, not a trx250r

I see no reason why it would be illegal to sell a trike at a dealership, it was illegal for them to keep producing NEW models, this is a used vehicle with a title so it can be sold by whomever.

...lol sorry i forgot my calculator today, I was just using the number so you got my point. and i do know the average 450 weight is around 400 pounds so i guess i got myself going off that number even though i know the 250r is much lighter due to it's 2 stroke engine. and i know the ds650 is close to 500 pounds, and as for rider weight...really? assume thats not a variable because i dont know then riders or anything so im pretending they are equal sized riders. and cattle-dog i was using the trx as an example, i said the trx is faster than the 650 and since the atc is same engine yet lighter than the trx you will be even faster, sorry its just how i explained myself since i have had alot of ride time on a trx250r and not an atc250r didnt mean to confuse anyone. my thought process may be a bit hard to follow  haha

lol my girl friend said the same about my thought process and yes the baja is 480 pds dry and its a x so it has all the extra stuff to.

eh no, there was a dealer over here in oregon that had a mint 86 atc250r for sale for $5000. And I have seen many places sell trikes.

I am not positive on this, but i think that the " consent decree" expired in 1997, which makes it not only legal to sell them, but it is also legal to start producing them again. I dont think there is much demand, and i am sure the big 3 has no desire to fight legal battles all over again when inexpierienced riders start hurting themselves!!

this place is a small old time honda shop where only two guys work and own it, the mint 200s is $700 nice trike, i am dieing to get my r home and ride it rounding up all my toy funds i went again today just to get some pictures .

In jersey dealers, honda and etc, can't sell a trike but the small ma and pa shops can. I have heard of some big shops selling trikes out the back door but it's in who you know.
Thats a great looking R and if you can't eat that DS I'd ask for my $$ back.

03-06-2010, 05:35 AM
they should make them and only sell them to expierienced riders then make a contract that says once you buy the bike we are not responsible if u hurt yourself and act like a total idiot then try suing the manufacturer.
if i could i would make a law that if someone tries suing the manufacturer for their own mistake they should get their bank account cleaned out.

JohnR.
03-06-2010, 09:32 AM
Unfortunately those "contracts" have been tried with a lot of things over the years and lawyers manage to find a way to sue anyways. People's refusal to be responsible for their own actions have cost us many things riding areas and trikes. Its ruining this country.

Hey man that r is pretty trick. Get some decals on it and run it! BTW hold on

cattle-dog
03-06-2010, 03:01 PM
yea it needs the decals then i dont lie the back tires look more rounded like a utility trike instead of more square sidewall to tread area

Mr_RPM
03-06-2010, 04:17 PM
yeah, get holeshots or razors or turf tamers. my personal fav is the maxxis razors

cattle-dog
03-06-2010, 04:47 PM
i like the razors as a tire i have them on my baja but i wouldnt want the colored letters showing on my 250r

Mr_RPM
03-06-2010, 04:59 PM
the color comes right off with a little bit of rubbin, mine wore off just from weathering. so im guessing anyway to shave off a little layer to take out the color would work. sand paper would work. its just on the surface

Ah you must have gotten this from my neighbor Eddie Remis. Owner of Lock City Cycle. Nice buy to say the least. Eddie is a great guy. I am always roaring trikes over to his place. Old Old Old school honda dude for sure!

JohnR.

Those look like stock tires on the rear. Its definitely well bought at $1700 IMHO. If its as nice as it looks in the pics its a really clean trike. Get some Cheng Shins and get it ready for Raffa's Ice Fest 2011!!

the only thing i dont like is someone painted the frame with a brush but that is only paint and it can wait till next winter as i am dieing to ride it everyday like my sx. and i will be attending some rides for sure and will bring both bikes incase one breaks.

JohnR.
03-07-2010, 04:26 PM
Yeah, a little paint isn't permanent. Enjoy it for a while the way it is before you make it too nice. :)

cattle-dog
03-07-2010, 04:48 PM
yea thats the plan the rest of the bike is very nice and 10 feet away it looks mint, it wouldnt matter how nice it is if it was mint it would still be in the mud lol my sx is near mint and it is in the mud everyday, when i put something together it gets used and abused. whats a trike without dirt or mud? useless.

I hear you. I only use my R for the ice and the couple of trips we've made to the dunes in MI. With the short track tank and stuff it doesn't have the fuel capacity to hit the woods and its a lot of work to switch it back over to the stock tank. That's why I keep my 350X around.

John

thats a diffrent story your r is built for a certain thing thats not a garage queen, i will tell you i love getting up early while the snow is frozen and flying across our fields the traction is perfect at 8am around 10 am it gets to soft but early its like flying down a airstrip our property is a mile deep i hope i get to ride my r in these conditions wide open flat snow/ice surface, that must be what the ice run is like.

JohnR.
03-07-2010, 06:05 PM
Its definitely a lot of fun tearing down the ice or across an open field. It looks like your not too far from Raffa's at all so hopefully we'll see you there next year.

congrats on the bike !!!

just a week ago, i was at the local bike shop asking a few questions, and the feller told me they cant even sell a used one.
they can only get parts for them.
