1985 rm 250/84 rm 250 cylinder

i have a 1985 rm 250 and i was looking for a jug on ebay and found one for an 84 rm 250. i looked at the bikes and they looked pretty similar in the way they were built.so i got the jug here and went to put it on i turned the engine over with the head off and the piston came up out of the cylinder past the ring groove as far as the way they are made everything is the same except the cylinder height. it says that the bore and stroke are the same in the parts books ...could that 84 jug actually be for a 85 lt250r??
