O.K. guys, here we go with my nonsense. I've jabbered with vealmonkey a time or two and he says there are people on this forum that would get a kick out of this story. Back in '81 my brother-in-law turned me on to trikes. I was 38 then so you know how old I am now. Anyway I was raising wives, kids, houses, cars and bills back then so money for toys was TIGHT. I saved and saved and in late '82 I slapped down $1300 for a brand spanking new Honda 185s. Most of my riding was in the woods and strip mines. Later on we rode two weeks a year in the mountains out of snowshoe Pa. Well after a year or so or riding hard tail and reading three wheeling magazine, I needed some suspension. You know, JUST BECAUSE! Cash was sent to P K Racing products in California for their hot tip triple trees. They were sure pretty but they were far from being the HOT TIP. After I bolted them on, the trike steered just like a kids tricycle. Straight up and down. Off I went with my protractor to the bike shop to measure the caster angle of production stuff that had front tubes. I settled on a number and milled a long slot next to the top nut and pulled it back. Made a filler slug, tightened it up and were good to go.
That sure rode better but lookie here, they make a bolt on rear swing-arm. I just GOTTA have that. Got PK on the phone and the kit was in the mail COD. Now you got to understand I just spent a LOT of money on this thing brand new and putting on the front was just unbolt and bolt. But the back was HUH?
Instructions says; Grab saw and cut the back end of machine OFF. I sat there and looked at it a LONG time before I picked up that saw. Well, the kit fit perfect, and what a ride. It was awesome.
After it was done I called PK and asked them if they built a skid plate. Guy on the phone says huh, what do you want with one of those? Just where are you calling from? I says Ohio and we ride in the woods with rocks and logs and stuff. He says they ride in the sand and NO they make nothing!
So that brings us to now. 20 years ago my offspring wrapped the rear wheel around the big swing set pole at the local schoolyard. It's been in my barn ever since. Axle bent like a dogs hind leg. This forum has inspired me to get it back out and make it ready for the next generation. My grandson. It's not gonna be a total resto but more of a fix everything that needs fixed and a good clean-up. You can see it peeking out of the shed and then WOW the sun. If any of you guys want anymore of this story or see any more pics, just say so............zeeker

To me it doesn't get any cooler than the original owner and the original modifier (and of course the original destroyer). LOL Welcome to the boards zeeker. Glad to see you got the pics deal straightened out. I'm looking forward to seeing what you will be doing with the trike. Best of luck with the resurrection.

I bet once you get it going your gonna wish it never sat for all those years. I'm sure the grandson will enjoy. Cheers

That's cool! A new axle and you should be ready to roll. It doesn't look like it needs much more than that. Is it a stock axle in there?

zeeker1
03-23-2010, 11:19 PM
922319223292233

One bent axle and damage. The kit uses the stock axle with the rubber dampers to hold the sprocket in place. I never thought I beat on it very hard but but it sure ate the OD of the sprocket hub up. I have a pair of sprockets on the way from Bike Bandit as we speak. I don't think I'm gonna use Honda's engineering again. I'm going to try something else. By the way, The motor hasen't run for 20 years either so I don't know what I'll get into there. And I see some rust inside the gas tank. One thing at a time.

Just to add a bit more to this nonsense, Back in '82 when I first bought this, all my rich buddies were into rail buggies. One of them had a old house in Orviston Pennsylvania (the middle of nowhere) that they used as base camp. He had access to a hunting camp way up in the mountains and it was a real experience getting all that gear up there. I went along to ride in my friends buggy but took my three wheeler along. Well everybody rode it around the front yard and EVERYBODY said the same thing."Zeeker, you're gonna kill yourself on that thing". There were a dozen buggies and a half dozen motorcycles and me in that camp. By the next spring there were only 6 buggies and 6 three wheelers in camp. By fall there was only ONE lone buggy. The main reason was after a hard day running up and down those mountains it took a toll on those machines. They spent all the next day replacing trans axles, motors, going to base camp for the welder and generally fixing everything they broke. With the trikes, all you did was gas up, check the oil and lube the chain. 15 minutes and your off. All the guys had automatics back then. Hondas or 225dx yahamas. One of our favorite rides was out to a giant swamp (wet land) called cranberry. We would spend a half a day playing in the mud. Everybody that has got stuck with an auto trike knows you just get off, grab the rear bar, give it the gas and heave it up out of there. RIGHT? Well after a time most of these guys had to get something bigger and faster. 2oox, 250r, 350x, etc. SO, with these shifter beauties you're just one arm short from throwing them out of the slop. I know you all can guess.........We never went back to the swamp again!

zeeker keep the stories coming very cool. and that three wheeler you have there is just as cool.

Well we'll try this again. Me and pictures just don't seem to get along. For the curious I dug out my old packing slip so you can see what one of these swing arm kits cost back in the day. Notice it included the pipe (valued at $70.00 and two longer brake cables for a whopping $25.00) and was sent COD. The pipe did not come with a spark arrestor ( I guess you don't need one in the desert) so I had to send them more money. I called Barnett to see if the cables were still available and the guy says SURE, we'll make em for you, just send cash. They even sent me the prints. They are four inches longer than stock. Anyway, after riding around with that god awful LOUD pipe for a month, it was time for a change. We did a lot of sneaking around farmers barns to get from one spot to another and my friends were not all that happy with me. Some people say you can't use the OEM muffler with a rear suspension kit but mine fit back on with a slight modification. I used the PK head pipe and whipped out a crude adaptor to mate the two sizes of pipes together. Even the stock air box was retained. Things are moving slowly but they're still moving.

980749807598076980779807898079All rite, all rite! Veals pushing me. All I was gonna do was give it a good bath and change out the axle but sh!t just happens you know. I've decided to build a circus wagon for my grandkid. He likes bright colors so I'm gonna make it BRIGHT. It's far from stock so we're not going to call it a restore. Just make it purdy. I'm still blasting the strip mine mud off of my motor with baking soda. After twenty years it's turned into concrete. MEAN! I'm not quite ready to start assembly but soon. If anybody cares, I'll keep posting pix on this thread. The one shot is what it looked like after a garage fire back in '85. Veal told me maybe it has nine lives. nice kitty.........Here's a couple of pics of the swingarm in case you missed them. Also, this is what a original Honda title looks like in Ohio. My powder coated friend FINALLY got busy. Man, painters are SLOW! I probably should have PC'd more of it but I got tired of waiting and just started blasting and painting at work.

06-22-2010, 03:35 PM
whao, works shock there zee?

Vealmonkey
06-22-2010, 03:45 PM
Works shock came with most kits. A few kits had Bilsteins. Just depended on whose kit you bought. These kits really were a big deal. At a time when the only suspension trike offered was the 250r, it gave guys with 4 stroke trikes a chance for a cushy ride. And it was somewhere around this time when frames were starting to be offered that took streetbike engines and put them in aftermarket frames with suspension also. These frames are history.

oldskool83
06-22-2010, 04:11 PM
there was one of these swingarms (looked the same on ebay the other day i noticed) but it said 200x swingarm which i knew it was not.

Vealmonkey
06-22-2010, 04:25 PM
Yeah, but that's just a part of the whole kit. It's been on there a while now. And I do so like how the 185s/200s kits look when done nice. Wether bolt on or weld on they have a look all their own. The really hot looking kits are the nicholson suspension frames, especially when it was the entire frame in chromoly. Here's an old picture of my bolt on kit. I need to get some new pics and maybe even get my 185s tank painted one day or at least some new decals. I mean you can't tell me that this trike isn't hot looking. LOL

Vealmonkey
06-22-2010, 04:51 PM
No, that engine hasn't been out of the box since I got it. The only thing I added to the box was a recoil starter with the proper decomp cable! LOL That was the engine from the frame I gave you. Still have the title and plasitc owners card and the original bill of sale and all the safety pamphlets and stickers as well. I did think about putting that engine in there though. It would be a little ripper wouldn't it? I could always put that engine in the suspension 185s frame with the weld on kit. But I would need alot of parts for it though. And more room!!! LOL

FINALLY!!!!!!! I got the damn 25 year old mud blasted out of the nooks and crannies. Probably would have been easier to tear the motor down and blast it but I'm cheap and didn't want to replace those expensive gaskets and seals if I didn't have to. We shall see when I get it fired up. Used a wire brush on a air motor for most of it and the baking soda worked pretty nice back in the head fins. One of the guys on the forum used the basecoat converter for x-metal paint on his engine and I thought it looked super but I can't find the freakin stuff ANYWHERE. I can find the paint but not the primer. To buy it online they want more for the shipping than they do for the paint. That makes me angry! Anyway, my circus wagon is about ready to assemble.

Vealmonkey
07-01-2010, 09:01 PM
Wow! Night and day difference. Very nice. I'm sure you have some time wrapped up in that whole deal. How much baking soda did you use to clean the fins out? It's going to look really nice when you put it all back together. I'm looking forward to the start of you re-assembly.

The factory front suspension is probably the cheapest and easiest to get. But if you find an aftermarket front suspension set up for the 90/110, it will fit the 185s. You just have to keep looking alot and maybe put a want ad in the classified section and you may get lucky.

It's surprising how much more comfortable it is with just the stock '83 (or newer) front suspension. Just be sure to get the correct hub and brake assembly, the "s" and the "m" are different.

this thread is really SWEET....the work is stunning...the history is impeccable

We really should have a section dedicated to "vintage aftermarket stuff" like this...stories and photos...
back in the day I remember all the ads in the back of mags that offered a SLEW of goodies for trikes
but the photos on alot of the small adds were black and white and sometimes didn`t have a pic, only a
description...nice to see pics of the vintage stuff and then restoring it

nice work on that trike build so far....thats a ton of work to make that thing look as good as it does already and I admire the effort

can`t wait to see it done

O.K gents, It's about ready to come off the bench. Finally got the rear fenders and seat mounted. Not an easy task to drill all those holes and NOT screw it up. If i would have bought this plastic direct from meier it probably would have came with the holes already drilled but NOOOOO, I had to save a buck and bought it from somebody else. I'll sure as hell call and ask the next time. Can you say FOUR HOURS? I'll be soliciting ideas soon from you guys soon as to what front fender would look good.

Zeeker, I don't think you need to solicit any ideas, you've already done an outstanding job. You've taken a pretty rare trike and you've made it stand out from the crowd. I've thoroughly enjoyed this whole build from start to near finish. I'm glad I help put the idea into your head to fix this trike up nice and really do it justice, and you've done exactly that. I would be proud to ride your trike. And who cares if the 250r crowd doesn't give your trike a second glance. This was the machine to have for those that didn't want a racer 250r in 1981. This was before the 200x hit the showroom. And these kits were still popular after the 200x hit the showroom in 83. Yet so few are around as most people didn't want a utility trike with some "hacked" on kit added. This is trike history here at its' finest. Great job zeeker.

zeeker,
sorry to hear this^^^^^....... i dont post a whole lot but i do like the bike, i've been reading since the begining. i had the chance to build one of the from the bare frame up, it was quite a task. everybody that saw or rode the bike thought it was cool. my was a weld on kit but the same principle.

i like the colors you chose too. when you started posting pics i wasnt real sure, white frame and all the yellow, then red on top of that. it has came together real nice though and i cant see it being a different color now. some sort of decal on the tank, maybe a repop PK decal or something would look pretty cool. as for the front fender, i would recomend going with the older style 185 front, or even an older style 110 front, both in red. talk to veal about some mounts to put it down low, right over the tire. maybe i can dig some photo's of mine with the low fender for you. good luck with whatever you decide to do with your trike, hopefullly you stop back in to show us the final pic. i know i'll be watching for it. :)

With everything cleaned up and all bright and shiney, you can really see how your rear shock is pretty much at a 90 degree to the ground though. Do you have your preload set really soft to compensate for that? My rear shock has a little more rear angle than that though. Sorry about your electrical problems. All that shiney stuff is probably making it tough to get good grounds. Check your grounds.

Hey veal, isn't your kit from a different manufacture? The swingarm in this PK job has two holes about an inch apart. I've always used the front hole. Never thought about trying the back one. Note pix. Also my shock has no preload adjustment. Does yours? It sits about straight up and down. It's pretty soft. You wouldn't wanna do much jumping with it. That's O.K. with me.......I'm just a putter. Now with the grand-kid in a few years..........WELL........I don't know???????? Maybe I ought to start looking for an X or an R NOW.

This Is Incredible!.....top notch build IMO....please pass my comments on to Zeeker, VM. I really wish he was here more often. This kind of project deserves alot of recognition.

Again, top notch work....I love the R`s and the X`s but I REALLY love a performance build on a less popular machine....it goes to show you can make whatever you want out of whatever you have with enough patience and elbow grease.

Thanks for the link, Veal

Okay gents, I know it's been a while but other pressing nonsense has interrupted this fun. As we last spoke, you notice I was having spark issues and ME, not being one to say "NO" (Hell, I've fixed a few lawnmowers in my time....How hard can it be?) I'll figure this business out. Can't be THAT hard. CAN IT? WELLLLLLL, Yes it can, If you're as dumb at electronics as I am! I olmed wires till I was blue in the face. Everything I measured was exactly what the book said it should be. Every ground was GROUND! WTF? SOooo I started buying STUFF. Don't tell me you haven't done this......You know who you are..... First I bought a "used but good" one of these off of ebay...133711
Well that didn't produce any spark so I bought one of these133712 I thought I followed the instructions perfectly when I installed it but who knows, I hoped for the best!............NO SPARK............Okay, that didn't work, Let's try one of these133713 NOPE! Well, Hell, Let's try one of these. There's not much left.....IS THERE????133714 SORRY!!!!! &#$*&!...I'm OUT of ideas! So, What do you do: You olm all the wires AGAIN! Sure you do! I am now thoroughly @&%^#$ so WHAT TO DO????? I'm now admitting defeat so I get out the phone book and look up atv fixers. Well, there's some nice guy ten miles up the road whose ad says they can fix em all, so off I go. Turns out he can't fix nothing! Says he fired the guy that could two years ago. Just never bothered to change the ad! RIGHT! Got a map for the next guy twenty miles down the road and when I got there, It was nothing but a bulldozed lot. So much for that outfit! OKAY, I guess I'll bite the bullet and pay the LONG DOLLAR at the local Honda shop. I don't wanna, but what's a dumb F like me to do? Service manager says you got a WHAT???? Hell, we don't fix those things! You know you can't get parts for those things no more! DUH! DON'T BRING IT HERE! Gee, If the HONDA shop won't fix a HONDA.....OH MY...What am I gonna do NOW? So, I ask the guy if he knew of anybody that MIGHT....Look at it, Reluctantly he wrote down a name and phone number. I call the dude and he says sure, he'll fix it. Says he was a OLD Honda mechanic and there wasn't any Honda he couldn't fix. HALLALOUYA Thank You Lord. So I haul it over and show him all the parts I've replaced and as he's pulling them out of the box he keeps saying" this never goes bad, This hardly ever goes bad, Hell, you never need to change this". HUH WTF? Says it's something simple and should be done in three days! Three WEEKS later I call the guy up and ask "What's the poop with my trike?" Lame excuse. A week later his WIFE calls and says it's done "come and get it". By the way, I had put a brand spanking NEW carburetor on it. So I go and pick it up. He ain't there. Wife is. "So, What was it's heartburn", I asked? She said he said the timing was WAY off and the carburetor was full of crap and plugged up. OOOO KKKK ! It started and I drove it on the truck. I"M HAPPY $100.00

Had my exhaust system ceramic coated. What do you think?133720

Zeeker, I hate to laugh at you malady, but the smile you gave me sure was appreciated. I think we've all had those days. Glad to see your up and running. Guess I better get on those measurements for you then since you need another project to keep you out of trouble! LOL

Zeeker, sweet ride, I'll bet a 250SX front fender would look good on there.

O.K. fellas, we're ALMOST done. Now that it starts and runs, I've been busy taking my new parts off and putting my original stuff back on. I checked for spark after every item. I'm not touching the pulse generator cause if that's where I screwed up the first time, I don't want to do it again! I rebuilt my old carburetor so I still want to swap it for the Chinese beauty to see if I still remembered how to rebuild one. I settled on a original '82 front fender from Maier (That's AFTER I bought a big red fender that I thought was gonna be the HOT TIP). It'll be for sale in the classifieds SOON.

Wow Zeeker. I just read this from begining to end. Very awesome. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Now I'm sad. I just scraped my 82 185s I had sitting in the garage. I had an ad to part it out because I couldn't afford to get it rideable again. Not one person was interested. I stripped all the parts off it that I though I could use on my 125m in the event of breakage or failure then shoved it into the wife's Saturn that blew the motor and hauled it to the scrap yard. My garage is tiny and I just wanted to the room I guess. Felt it was taking up "valuable" space. Same reason my 74 Polaris TX 250 racing sled went away for a measly $180. I wish I would have kept it now that I feel inspired. Too late! Thankyou for the good read though.

At least I have the 125m to tinker with and ride. *Sighs* :TrikesOwn
