Just put the motor back together on my 86 tecate and can't get it to run. It just backfires. Think it may b my timing. Any suggestions?

you mean spark timing right?

timming light hook power to a 12 volt power source then hook your lead around the coil wire.then check your timming marks hope this helps

If it won't run there isn't much point in putting a timing light on it. Have you ever replaced the stator or had it rebuilt?

It's the original stator. I don't think it's ever been rebuilt. My plug has good fire though. I was told that if my crank seal is leaking, I may be sucking air into the cylinder which will cause it not to start. Have you ever heard this?

Yes, its common on 2 strokes and causes them to go lean. Still, I'd look at other possibilities. How's the carburetor? How long was it apart for?

What did you rebuild on the motor, top end? Have you taken the flywheel off? Check the flywheel key for starters, it could have a sheared key. check the marks on the stator plate, and case, and it should be in the middle line, and the mark on the flywheel should line up. Check a manual, it will probly tell you exactly what you want to know.

On my old bikes that had points, you simply hooked a battery and bulb up to the point set, rotated the crank until the points opened and the bulb went out and checked the timing mark as shown in the manual. If you had no battery and bulb, you used a strip of thin paper and pulled on it, when the points open they let it go and that's the point the spark fires. Static timing was bang on.

Motor sat up for several years. I pulled the trans case side cover off, looked good and put it back on and then put a new top end. Nikasil in the cylinder was in good shape. When I put the jug together, I made sure the power valves were in the closed position. I had the stator on the middle mark, then went to the first and third mark, all it will do is backfire. I found tdc and put the flywheel on and all 3 marked lined up at 12 o'clock. The carb is the carb that came on the bike. I took it apart twice. All looked good. My plug in wet when I pull the plug so I am getting gas. Idk, I am stumped
