ive been told by some local guys that the 1988 2 stroke 250r 4 wheeler are great and all but you have to rebuild the motor all the time, just wondering if there is any truth to this.
2 strokes generally need to be rebuilt more often then 4 strokes. i have only rebuilt one once. i usually dont keep bikes that long lol

That is false. I would say it will need rebuilt every few years, or say every 100 hours of riding if you run a good 2 stroke oil. Look on craigslist or ebay at the new 450 racers. Notice how many of them have new engines. I would say the 250r is just as reliable as the new 4 stroke racers.

so that would pan out to a rebuild about every 60 days lol

Yeah, when I raced the 250-open 2 stroke class I might get the season out of my LT250 before it would let go. most guys who ride/race alot rebuild or refresh a motor every few months.
Those who say you get years and years out of a 2 stroke top end do not ride alot.

i always put in a new piston in every year i dont race but i ride alot i just do it just to be safe and usually i do a bottom end every 2-3 years i just check it when i do the top end to see if it has play or if the bearings are shot....but if i first buy a two stroke i usually always take the jug off to see how worn it is then i go from there cant trust anyone anymore that say its a new motor....bought a kx 250 one time guy said he rebuilt it had good compression but about a week later the piston shattered on the front skirt took it apart had a stock oem piston in it when he said he put a weisco
