View Full Version : 1986 ATC 250R "Teaching the Next Generation" Triker LOTS OF PICS

Dammit! called me about 3 weeks ago and told me that he met a fellow fanatical triker by selling an 85 Swinger on C-List. He proceeded to tell me this fine young man was going to experience Mother G on our April ride and how "clapped" out his bike was. I offered my time, blood, sweat, not so much in the way of tears for me....and some parts. In exchange he would work with me on it and bust his ASS to get it ready for the ride.....pay attention, listen and learn...simple stuff.
So last Saturday afternoon Dammit and Mike dropped off the tired R and we proceeded to dismember a once proud 1985 R. So many things were done so wrong on this machine the only thing that remains from the bike is the motor, carb, rubber grommets and some hardware and of course the swingarm that Dammit helped him install. The frame had a 2 Gen 250r front end and they ground off the steering stops so the radiators performed that job.

So after we tore down the bike I pulled a frame I had blasted a couple months ago and layed some primer on after teaching Mike how to prep the frame.

During the week I did what I could to round up parts pieces and did some other little things.
So this past Saturday the build started.

Nice use of a hammock frame for a hanger! Cool! Ireally dig those Rs. How hammered was the radiator???? I did the Tie-Wrap job on my 86 R when I had it.

Here's a few pics of the nearly completed trike from this past weekend at Glamis.
It performed very well overall. The left rear wheel fell off because somebody forgot the cotter pin () but luckily it happened at camp and at low speed. The trike lasted the entire weekend until the very last ride. The stator went out. Funny thing is, the stator went out in my R the day before. Must be contagious.
Only things left to do besides obviously replace the stator, is put a polished front rim on it and replace some of the temporary/borrowed parts on it like the drive chain and front fender. Oh, and some custom decals will be coming soon.

"So many things were done so wrong on this machine"
THATS no joke... and the damage they do.
Only thing is itll stop running, it looks like a Tri Z....
(Honda fanatic humor)
DARN nice and kudos for helping a kid. Without us old farts they wont know how to restore them. Dang Honda fiches arent enough.

The neat thing is that you guy's built an awesome looking 250R ,but the coolest thing IMO is that you guy's did it with a younger generation triker and I'm sure you and Dammit educated him the whole time.I am still bragging up your 250R to all my peep's Mr Clean as it is prolly the cleanest 250R I have seen since seeing one on the showroom floor.I'm sure he loved getting his trike pimped out.Way to go guy's !!

His name is Mike and he's not a member yet. He doesn't have internet where he lives currently. When that changes you can be sure he'll join up.

Stator came today! Thanks again and thanks for the extra bonus items!
I love this build. It's a reminder of everything that is cool and unique about the 3 wheeler community. 200xman and yamahondaman have both sent parts to help with this build and have never even met this guy before. Very cool and thanks to everybody involved. :beer

SUCH A GREAT THREAD!!!! I'm absolutely thrilled you were able to help out a fellow 3 wheeler lover! I always try to look for people in my area interested in 3 wheelers but no one as of yet! This site has been the best thing since sliced bread to me! has helped find any part i need and at the same time make some great friends! Currently helping my friend rebuild a ATC70 for his 4 year old daughter who fell in love with mine last summer! Pay It Forward everyone the world would be a better place!
