I have never had a dirt bike before, but this weekend I bought an 83 xr500 with an xr600r engine... and it runs great and I am very happy with the price I paid for it.... but I need help cause it is very hard to start.... the kick start is VERY heavy and I cant get it to start with the decompression held down.... again I have never had a dirt bike before so I know nothing of them.... can anybody help?

600 motor in a 500? 1st i ever hear of this, from what i knew frames were totaly dif. there should be a cable that attaches to the front of the head and to the rear of the kicker starter at the bottem. normaly the cables like 20 bucks or so. i could use one on my xr200 cuz the larger bore has made it harder to kick over.

It doesnt have wire to the kickstart at all but it does have a lever near the clutch but if i hold it down it doesnt start.... Is there a specific way to do it? Its a manual decompression so how should i to it?

There should not be a manual decompression. i just looked up the schematic for an 84 xr500 and it shows a decompression cable, also looked up 85 xr600 and again it shows a cable. post a pic up close to the motor so i can see it.

The decrompressor on the center rear is an automatic with a cable that goes to the lever between the kick starter. There is a manual decompressor, located on the right front of the valve cover, with a lever under the clutch lever on the handlebar.I had the same thing,a xr500 with a xl600 in it.If you don't have especially the automatic system it's very hard to start.

Get the valves adjusted correctly, this will help you start it when you get the decompression thing worked out.

the motor needs to be at top dead center when you go to kick it. slowly kick the engine over until you feel a small indentation thats tdc thats where you kick it. mine always hard to have choke on to start
