My girlfriend is trying to generate some income and she's trying to get an idea of if people would be interested in her photography pitch, this is what she has to say (and yes I was lazy and copy and pasted what she wrote haha):

"So, right now in about any part of the country its really hard to find a job. I live in Southern California and I'm finding it especially hard to find a job. My boyfriend and I were just sitting and talking about it and I came up with this idea:

I used to work at a portrait studio (I was there for a year). The main age range for subjects was 2-5 years, and I got very comfortable with shooting children of that age, as well as learning how to deal with them so I could get that perfect shot. I have a professional camera and reliable transportation, so I'm thinking about advertising myself as an "on-location child photographer"...

While I'm getting the business going, my services would start as such:
On-Location, natural light portraits. Customer would receive a CD with all portraits taken during the session, along with rights to print as they wish (providing they sign a release that I can also use their child's portrait in my portfolio). Rates would start at $100/hr, with a 15 minute minimum. So you could get EASILY 40 pictures of your child on a CD for $25. Time "on the clock" does not include whatever set up or tear down needs to be done, and does not include time spent getting the child comfortable with the camera.

Session times will be agreed upon before the shoot starts, and consist of time spent shooting pictures, not time spent with the subject.

As the business grows and I start getting money for such things as a photo printer and hiring someone in that can photoshop pictures, I can start offering those services as well.

Just so I know how well this would do, how many of you would actually be interested in something like this? "

Tell her to go for it. Just start out with an ad on craigslist and see what happens.

Forget the $100 an hour pitch and charge a flat rate ($100 an hour will scare people off). At least in the beginning anyway. Assuming your customers are happy with your service and start recommending her, she can adjust her rates accordingly.

Get some business cards made up, then go to Staples and get some business card fridge magnets. Give one to every customer. Fridge magnets almost NEVER get thrown out. Everybody puts them on the fridge to hold notes and whatever. That way when a customer wants to tell a friend, the info is always right there.
