I just picked up a '84 250r off craigslist today. I have had a couple 200x's and a 350x but this is my first 250. I have been chomping at the bit to get on 3 wheels again and the price was right so I grabbed it. I need to do a little work (gas line, brake lever, chain) before I can take her out. Is there anything special I should know about the 250r (besides mixing oil in the gas?)

Well, since I didn't know much about the history of this bike, I decided it would be best to tear into it a little bit and verify everything is in good working order. As always though I couldn't help myself and I tore every last nut and bolt off in order to inspect it and clean it up. I am very pleased with the condition of everything especially the engine. The guy I bought it from said he had done some work to it recently and the motor appears to be completely rebuilt. So with a little elbow grease, a wire wheel, some sand paper and little paint, I am in the process of getting this thing "prettied up" and back together. Here are a couple pics of my progress so far.

I do have a question for you 250r gurus, the clutch lever pulls much easier than I thought it would. Is this typical of a 250r vs. a 350x?

so does anyone have any ideas about a clutch lever that moves very easily?

Possibly your cable just needs to be adjusted. Is there a lot of play in the cable before the clutch arm on the bottom end of motor moves? There should be a little play in the lever though. It looks like your adjuster screw (on left handle bar, into clutch perch) is adjusted in all the way. I'd say wait until you get it all together, and then adjust it as needed.

best thing for an old bike is just buy a new clutch cable. They are around $18. there is probably so much grit in there it is making the clutch pull stiff, unless some moron used heavy duty stiff springs when they changed the clutch!

So, 5 months later and I am all done with it. Of course the summer here in Phoenix doesn't allow you to work in the garage much so it took a lot longer than expected but I have been riding and fine tuning it now for almost 2 months. I think it is awesome. I'm not sure yet if I like it more than my 350X but it is definitely close. I have a couple of small details yet to complete like swapping out the gold front rim for a silver one and getting some new handlebars and fabing up a set of aluminum tank shrouds. Other than that I think it is complete.

i like 2nd generation r the best they seen like they would be lighter weight and have lower center of gravity than the 85-86 and they look good too. I have an 85r but I would almost rather have an 83-84 because I am only 165 pounds and could throw on of those around more easily

This is plenty quick for sure! I just wish it had 1 more gear, I always find myself trying to shift up in 5th gear

I like the color shceme! Great work! I am going to run white fenders on my 84 R as well (already have the front), I really like the look of them. What did you use for the number plate? Wouldnt it be sweet to make some replica SRP super scoops for the R tank out of aluminum sheet? Im deffinatly going to do it! I did it on my 200x, and it really stands out, and looks great. Thanks for sharing!
