The BR doesnt have a bendix. Take the cover plate off and check to see the condition of the teeth on the starter gear (in the motor) They are prone to wearing...

Could this be something with the 1 way clutch on the left side of the engine going bad? The starter motor teeth were trashed and somebody had removed the reduction gears on the engine in my 85, so I'm assuming this is what happened.

I just went thru that.

NEW starters were like 49 bucks a month or so ago. Found them on ebay and just called the company directly.
rebuild brushes and end plate were 29$. and quite frankly a pain to align but ok if the starter died a natural death and nothing ELSE is wrong with it.

Pretty sure it took under 4 minutes to pull the starter out on the 85 and you might be able to see both sets of gears.

My 85 had that cold start issue and I thought the starter would be better than kicking the s.o.b. 18 times when cold..1/2 kick when warm...which might be the reason the brushes were toasted...85 famous coldstart issue.

now there has to be some sort of overrunning clutch that disengages when the thing starts but I never had tyo go that deep.

The starter simply has gear teeth like the metal end of a pencil sized and NO bendix or throw out thingie. its a constant mesh to the override clutch driven gear under the side cover that I didn't have to deal with.

you say it spins ok the first couple times? and THEN grinds?
Hopefully the brushes are almost gone and it's arcing when it gets hot on the 3rd try...
praying for the easiest and cheapest fix there is for you.

just yank it out of there and hot wire it with some jumper cables, but hold it down with your foot.

The torque could easily twist it out of your hand and land on your foot.
2 x 10 mm head bolts and under 5 min and you'll have part of your answer
