Hey everyone we just picked up a 1985 Honda ATC200S for 400 bucks. Anyways when i test rode it everything was fine no stalling no backfiring ran great only problem was it was real rough shifting. the guy said there was a spring that broke that was connected to the shift lever thats y it shifted rough he said it was an easy fix. So we bought it got it home the next day it kept backfiring and stalling and the plug kept fouling out but there was no oil leak and it never smokes well we talked to some friends and they thought the float was probobly stuck so we took the carb apart and cleaned it all up and it fired right up and it doesnt backfire anymore but it will still stall occasionally. So Saturday we took it riding it ran pretty good with it stalling a few times but the last time it stalled we went to start it and it is a pull start by the way. When you pull the cord it feels like it isnt grabbing at all the cord flys right up with no resistance and now it wont start.

So after all that said my questions
1. Anyone have any suggestions as to why the pull start isnt catching? And is it an easy fix?

2. When we finally get the pull start working again. Anyone know what the deal is with the stalling we tried to mess with the adjustments nothing seems to work?
3. Is the so called spring that helps the shifting be smooth an easy fix?

Any help will be greatly appreciated
Thanks
JOE

The pull start could have come apart inside, or something could have shifted. You can take it off the trike easily and check it. It sounds like the clutch may not be adjusted right. When you say hard to shift, do you mean the pedal is hard to push down into gear.

yes it is hard to upshift or downshift sometimes it takes a few minutes to click it into neutral it has no clutch it is automatic shift

Thats not good - these automatics are great fun but expensive to fix - get a manual and then yank off that sidecover and hope that the problem is right there and visible - otherwise it will not be fun to say the least. Your recoil problem is a piece of cake and an easy fix - just open it up and see.

It has a centrifugal clutch. If it is in this assy under the side cover that is the problem, it will be pretty easy to fix like Dirtcrasher said. If it is the shifter forks or similar, you will not enjoy that job.
