View Full Version : Trike value compared to other collectible recreational vehicles

To me , It seems like depending on what type of recreational vehicle it is, that they have totally different price values. For an example, you look at an all original arctic cat 800 4 cyl King cat and you can't find one for less then $15,000. seen some go for 30,000. And comparing to an all original Tiger 250 or cagiva , which is also a limited production ready to race collectible , will basically sell for around , what ,$3000-$5000 maybe a little more?.

I've seen some limited production vintage moto cross bikes sell for alot more then what some of our trikes could sell for.. I get this response alot from people when they tell me " what are you doing or going to do with all those trikes you have?" I tell them that, I hope they might be worth some money some day just like muscle cars, vintage race sleds, and such. and help on my retirement fund. They always laugh at that.

I have a friend that collects vintage race bikes and dirt bikes and he has some mint and excellent vintage machines. He has sold some for high money and had to buy alot for high money.

I guess, it just doesn't seem as though they will get what I'm hoping for in the future, comparing to the other vehicles . Knowing that trikes can't really be compared to other vehicles but still highly discouraging to watch some of these other recreational vintage racing machines keep climbing in value compared to our trikes.

Whats your input on this. Thanks

Pretty hard to predict. I was watching a Barrett Jackson Auction about a month ago, and I was surprised how cheap restored cars from the late 60's, early 70's went for. You couldn't buy one and restore it for the money some went for, under $25,000. I guess it all depends on the market and maybe media influences. HBO shows Band of Brothers, and next thing you know Garand Rifles double or triple in value.

I don't mind if the Cagivas and Tiggers go for a bit more money, but I'd prefer the market be flooded with affordable 3-wheelers and parts to keep them going for 25 more years. I'm not quite ready for 3-wheeling to become a wealthy-collector-only affair like classic muscle cars have become.

Just wanted to say, I love 3 wheelers. This is deffinetly what I love to do and have for a hobby and will until the day comes if I have to sell then it will be a sad day , so don't get me wrong on the Retirement fund only for that is not all true. Thats what I tell the wife to keep allowing me to get more.

I agree with you DPboy, but I highly doubt you would see this with 250R,350x,tr-Z not that they are not collectors but was only using the Tiger and cagivas for they were limited production trikes for sure

I was making a joke, but being serious at the same time. That's my take on it. That's the short story. The long story is that 3 wheelers were pronounced to be dangerous, and they bashed it into everyone's brain, so they became less desirable to the masses. You know the story, every time you tell someone you ride three wheelers, the first words out of their mouths are "they are dangerous" or "aren't they banned"?
So, who in their right mind would ever want one. 3 wheelers are dangerous.

Yup, riverrat, I agree 100%, my response was totally with what you said, since they are dangerous shouldn't they be worth more?, because that's cool? 'Three-wheelers don't kill people, guns kill people.'

You're right as far as I can see. I believe that is alot of the reason that the prices aren't higher than they are.....and I hope it stays that way.

ATCwithdrawals, just hope you didn't take my first post the wrong way. I didn't mean to infer that you wished to drive the prices up and knock the regular folks and riders out of our niche. I've just seen so many things become cost restrictive because of people trying to corner a market on an item or an activity and inadvertently(and in some cases on purpose) restrict that item or activity to those with more money or a more elitist standing.

I don't want that to happen to 3-wheelers anytime soon....as I'm sure you don't.

"Guns don't kill quads....3-wheelers kill quads"

Guns are not valuable because they are dangerous, they just happen to be dangerous. They are valuable because they are part of history, and the ones that are really valuable are really old. Trikes are still not that old yet. It also comes down to supply and demand also. Remember, gun owners have the NRA, and that keeps more people interested in guns than people in three wheelers. We need the NTA (national trike association). You also can't hang a trike on your wall, as easy as a gun. So collecting them is limited even further to a group of people that have the room, and want them as well.
Trikes are relatively valuable, they aren't trash. You can still get good money for one in great condition.

Well I can tell you this, trikes are more valuable in general than quads from the same era. So we got that going for us.

value is in the eye of the beholder!! If you look at dollar to dollar comparison example 2300.00 out the door for our 86 Tri-Z in 86 and a mint 86 z selling for more than that than I think they hold their value quite well. Don't think you could buy a 8,000 quad, ride it and get 8,000 for it 25 year from know no matter what shape. Just my thought......
