I'm picking up a 200x tomorrow and I'm going to need an engine. I know most of the 200cc engines will fit with no issues but can anyone guide me as to specifically what model and years will fit and the main differences. I'm particularly interested in something with a 6 speed tranny and a clutch vs an auto x but I'll go whichever route is cheaper and available.

Also if anyone has a running engine that they want to get rid of please post up or shoot me a PM. Thanks in advance.

You will definitely find 185 and 200 engines cheaper than an XR200 or CRF230 (which are 6 speeds). The XR engine needs some 200X parts to make the kicker a reverse kick. Someone said the CRF230 is a direct bolt in, with E-start, but I have looked and they are real pricey. I would just look for a stock 200X engine, they are common (cheap), and have a clutch.

So the stock 83-85 200x engines have a clutch? I thought they were auto.

Nope all the 200X and 350X have a clutch. Pretty easy to find the engines, there are 2 around me on CL for under $100.

i dont feel there is a need for 6th gear in a 200x. most times i can never get outta 2nd trail riding.

you can use a 81-83 xr200R motor and it will bolt is, 84-85 will not. 86-02 is close but not a 100% drop in.

any 185/185s/200/200s/200es/ not sure about a 200m but all them motors will fit. top ends are 100% the same from cylinder on yup between all the atc185/200 models, 200x and 81-83 and 86-02 xr200r

200x engine are on ebay for like 350 running perfect they say and normaly like 150-200 for the 185/200 motors. all CDIs will swap over, all cams swap also. cam chain and sprockets are all the same too. i would just get an auto motor and use it for a fun bike or find a nother 200x and swap out the good stuff. i use to buy 200x's alot for 400-500 max running bike with tons of extras...but all the motor needed work normaly

I am buying the engine I have the contact info for. The other one isn't on CL anymore, its been on and off till it expires. But you didn't miss out on anything it needed a new piston and I doubt the guy would have shipped, it was phone only. like call me, show up, have cash and leave. I was mostly just trying to point out that the 200X engines are pretty easy to find. I'm just getting it for spare parts. Or do a full rebuild on it. The Lifan engines are worth looking into. They seem to make a pretty good product.

I'm just looking for a cheap running engine so I can sell the trike as a runner. I haven't found a single x engine on ebay or craigslist within 200 miles so far.

You have to make your own 6 speed with XR parts or upgrade the whole trike to an 86/87 model :D

The 83-85 200X is just a whole different animal, even the way it feels and kicks over.

Ever ride an 86/87 200X?? You may fall in love..... :D

BUT, the aftermarket and available parts (if you have the cash) are allot easier to find for the 83/85 200X but I wouldn't want for a few reasons; One major one being the idiot engineer that put the kickstarter "GUTS" in the center case. He must have been promoted to the "genius" department

86-02 XR200R engines bolt in like the 81-83 XR's.

Buy a running auto clutch for cheap and flog it, most newbies like pull start over kick anyway.

Or buy a running XR200(R) engine, swap the kicker assembly from the 200X block to the XR block and there you have it, 6spd manual clutch trike.

YOU and everyone else. Build it yourself, 90$ of them do not the the kicker gear issues fixes and some other issues.
