hey guys . i just restored an 85 250 sx, everything but the internals of the engine. my problem is when i got it running i have this LOUD constant ticking/taping. imo it sounds like the timing chain or cam chain which ever you prefer to call it. or could it be the valves? chain tensioner worn out along with chain and slaping around? just wondering if it's somewhat common noise/thing to happen to this model or any of you have had one and experienced the same thing and what the problem actually was?the noise is there throughout the rpm range but is loudest and most noticable at idle. any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. thanks in advance. maxima

guess i'll just have to teardown, inspect and measure. i was just dreaming that after all the time i spent making the outside shiny and new again that the inside wouldn't need the same attention. i really do think it's the chain though. i shall see and report my progress.

valve clearance my friend start there then work your way down if your chain tensioner is all the way in I would say the timing chain is on its last leg

Yeah, my vote goes to valve tapping.
