Just forward of the gas tank, on both sides of the frame, is a box or channel of sheet metal on the 200x frame. What is that for?

If it's like the 250es, they are the air intakes.

It looks like something should run through it or be positioned in it. The factory manual confirms that neither the clutch nor throttle cables run through it. Must serve some purpose.?????

air intake and the little boxes are so mud and water do not splash in there easily.

If it was for an air intake, that idea was abandoned. I don't see any sign of my air box being connected to it (on an 84).

your airbox should be connected to it - they go into the frame's back bone - your airbox is hooked to the other end of the backbone!

I will have to take a closer look at it, and I guess if that's right on a 200x, I overlooked it. Thanks for the insight.

Like he said...those little "boxes" are covering air holes drilled in the frame tube...where the air first enters on it's path to the air filter. Take your gas tank off and look inside the "boxes"...you'll see the holes. The "boxes" allow air to flow through from under the headlight, but prevent mud and water from splashing up from the wheels. It's the same on the ES and SX(and probably 350X and 250R...but I don't have those)too. I WOULDN'T run any wires or anything else through there either...it's supposed to be empty and clean.

Grizzlypeg...if your air box is not connected to your frame tube...then something is wrong....there should be a breather tube connecting the air box to the bottom end of the frame tube.

Very ingenious design. Yes, my air box is connected as shown in that picture. This is the place to learn. Thanks.
