Runnin on fumes

Hello Everyone

I'm new to the scene but anxious at getting my feet wet with my new 84 atc 70. I just picked it up out of MS for $150. It is in pretty good shape but has been sitting up a while. When I started going through it I quickly found that it had no spark getting to the plug.

I changed the ignition coil, plug, points, and condensor (soldered wire to condensor). Cleaned stator coils and flywheel.
Got a spark out of the stator, using a test light but as soon as I connected the black wire to to the ignition coil I lose fire to the test light and it goes out.
Then for some unknown reason it does start getting weak fire all the way to the plug.

After all this i get a weak spark to the spark plug. Thin blue light and the bike still want start.

I figure the stator coils must be worn and bad.

I just ordered another complete stator maybe that will fix it. If anyone has any other suggestions please fill free to send them my way.

Sometimes playing with your gap on your points will increase the size your spark. Make sure your points are opening on the F mark. If your getting spark out of stator though it sounds like your coil could be bad. I bought a brand new coil from a atc 70 place online and it didn't work. It sparked but really really, weak. I think they sold me a 12 volt coil instead of a 6volt or something. Check your wiring harness for holes in the insulation and just disconnect your killswitch to eliminate it from the system for testing purposes. Well good luck.

The killswitch is diconnected and it is possible they sold me the wrong ignition coil. I will have to check that. As far as the points go. I have adjusted them to all ranges specified with a feeler gauge and it hasn't resulted in any change. I haven't check the wiring harness or changed it maybe that will be the next step before I get the new stator in.
Thanks.

Check all wires from the stator back, and make sure there are no cracks or bare spots. Also pull the stator out and make sure there is no rust and if there is lightly sand. Good luck and Welcome!
