Hi or Lo range, doesn't seem to matter, I'm hearing alot of what sounds like un-lubed gears or something when I ride it... are these things always noisy or am I gonna break it?

Ride her till she brakes, Matt. I have other bottom ends here for ya. Does it seem to shift smooth and go fine?

Fairly common for the hi/low box to make that sound . Thats one of the reasons I like to remove them when I build them up .

yeah, seems to ride fine, just noisy... although it is a pain to get it in hi range... have to roll it back and forth a bit, or do it when it's in gear (is that bad?)

My 78 90 made a nasty noise too, it was brocken teeth in the sub tranny and as of 5 or so years ago hoda could still get the gears.

I would worry more if your hi/lo box wasn't making a noise! LOL 25+ years of abuse can do that. I'm 48 and you should hear some of the noises I make when I'm moving around! LOL I've known people who try to put a little bearing grease in there to try and help quiet the noise. It can be a little messy, but it helps sometimes. Unless you go and get you some new gears, you will sort of just have to live with it. You may just want to shop around for some spare parts to keep handy just in case anyways. Shortline may have a whole box of gears for you. Just handpick the best looking pieces.

Wouldn't changing out gears involve opening it up?
I have a couple of motors I got from a board member, wondering if I should give one of them a try... this motor seems to have low compression anyway

EDIT Shortline, that's why I was asking about the 90 big bore kit
